I was accelerating (with wide open throttle) on to a very long freeway access road when at around 4500-5000 rpms and climbing (probably in 3rd gear) my engine had a very sudden and immediate drop/cut in RPMs and power. It felt like something had " blown or popped" or almost like a switch had been thrown to cut engine power.

I immediately thought "there goes the charge pipe". The check engine light came on and the engine ran very rough at lower rpms while I limped off the freeway. Engine light turned off after a few miles and after a few more miles of cautious driving normal engine response returned. After a few days of driving everything seems normal and there are nor service codes or warnings. Any ideas of what may have caused this? It was such an extreme event and then to have no continuing driveability issues seems odd. (2009 N54 47K miles)

Anyway inspect your charge pipe if it will be fine. Look for boost leak somewhere.
If you have possibility scan error codes I bet you will find boost leak.

Ihad similar awhile back, not WOT but I did power out of a turn, car hicupped, check engine light came on, significant loss of power, poor idle etc. Pulled off into a parking lot, turned the car off, then back on, no change. Started to limp toward my dealer which was only a mile away and as I did it cleared up. Turned car off, then back on a second time, light was gone and the car has run normally ever since. This was propably two months and over 1000 miles ago. I figured it was some junk in an injector that caused a misfire but really don't know...

It sounds to me like your HPFP is dying. I had mine fail at around 60,000km. It first started happening when I was overtaking or accelerating with WOT. After driving a bit or turning the car on/off it would be fine for a while. Eventually it started happening more frequently and with even less throttle. Took it into the dealership and they replaced it. Extremely common problem with the earlier N54s.
