Paint protection info...
Hi guys,
I've been offered a discount with BMW for a paint protection package and stuff... but have found it a rip off. I've done some research and found much cheaper options. However, I'm unsure about doing it and thought I'd ask everyone here and see all your opinions(if any)... Btw, my BMW 123D is coming in this week and its my first brand new car so naturally, I'd want to ensure the best for my 'baby'!! Any suggestions/feedbacks would be greatly appreciated! Cheers! |

Welcome to the forums mate. I got the leather and paint protection through the dealership at a discounted price but it was still expensive. I'm actually taking it in this week to get an inspection done to maintain the warranty for this. I've got a stain on my paint that I need them to look at. I'll keep you posted.

Hey Eddie
If you're not going with metallic, then no worries, probably don't need it. However, when you take delivery, be sure to get a clay bar and some wax products and give it a wash, clay, then waxing as soon as you can Would be happy to do a detail day with you if you like |

Paint protection is a rip off. Most people who does it just haven't got the skills to prep the car properly. If they don't prep the car properly - you'll end up with swirls underneath your sealant. From my experience "paint protection" usually only last about six months anyway - you know the film is gone when the water stops beading. If you found someone who actually properly preps the car and have a lifetime gurantee, it is definitely a good thing, but they could be hardly found. One of the best product is dodojuice Red Mist - just spray it on, and wipe it off, and it last for three months. Of course you have to prep the car yourself - which they are lots of info on the detailing forum.
For internal bits - since leather is standard, all you need is 10minutes and a bottle of aerospace 303 fabric protector ($20 bucks). There was a study that showed it repel water the longest with a foam duck and have it soaked in water - comparing with other popular product such as 3M scotch guard. Leather is such a wonderful thing that it doesn't need protection. Just a vaccum, or a wipe with a dam cloth, and you are good to go. You'll need to conditioned it now and then to keep the moisturised, and prevent it from cracking.

I have it on my car - was prepped properly and has a lifetime warranty, so pretty
happy with it. That said they have ridiculous margin on it (>100% mostly), so you can always bargain it down. Forget the cute girl smiling and focus on the numbers! If you have the time and patience to do the wash, clay, wax & seal process, this is by far the best way to go. If you don't, paint protection is pretty handy - I am pretty happy with mine still. |

I had it done at a small discount. I would not get it again. Waste of money...
As far as I know, most of them just wax your car and charge you $600 odd for it. After a few months it will wear out anyway and to be honest I don't think it really did anything. The paint came up better once I clayed it and waxed it about 6 months after I bought it. |

Agreed; I really doubt that layer of stuff will last a 'lifetime' and they say there's no inspections or anything. But I will get it redone if decide to keep the car past this year. I laughed my head off when the 'pretty girl' tried to explain how the product was created and how it works at a nano-tech level!

BTW, they hire the cute girls from the cosmetics industry. If you think about it for a sec you'll understand why - if they're successful at selling vastly overpriced creams and other potions on the promise that they will remove wrinkles, then they'll have a good shot at selling paint protection...

Thanks very much guys - I appreciate all your advices. As much as I love washing and polishing my cars, I think I'll be sticking to that and not worry about splurging more $$$!! Thanks Alex for your offer of a wax and clay assistance when I get my new car - I'll probably take up on it
Thanks Sparoz for recommending the products I should use to keep the car in tip top shape.. BMW86, hope you get some good news about the stain on your paint. Let me know how u went Cheers guys |

I chose to get the prestige treatment a year ago (paint, leather protection and tint) at a very heavily discounted price. I was initially very sceptical about it but the water still beads every time I wash it or it rains. It still looks a million dollars. I don't regret it one bit. The only thing is the small amount of car wash that they provide and the bug and tar remover are useless. Just remember to buy low suds shampoo (not any wash and wax products) and don't use auto car washers. The bug and tar remover wasn't very good but get a decent brand one preferably without the "extra shine".
The leather protection only needs a damp cloth clean every time and comes up glowing. Get the right treatment by reputable people and it is well worth it. |

Some of the specialist car care products dealers have tutorial days. Check it out.
A little story - When my wife decided that she wanted an X3 I did a ring around to get the best price, as one does. Found one of the last in the country with the specs she wanted on the Sunshine Coast. Tip - buy at the end of the financial or calender year. This is when sales people and dealerships are trying for quotas in order to get bonuses so they will even sell at cost if it means getting across the line. So, I managed to beat the next best price by over $8000. Got the usual approach from the pretty lady re tint and treatments etc but politely declined knowing it's a rip. Two weeks for delivery so my wife was anxious that it was a con and she would end up with the wrong car. About the day of expected delivery we get a call. "Hello Mr Gazz?" "Yes". "We have a problem with your car". Ah, here we go. Staying calm but ready for a fight - "Oh, what's the problem?" "Well we have mistakenly given your car a full paint and interior protection treatment and a full window tint." Slight pause, "We are really sorry, do you want the car as is or wait for another one, there is no cost to you as it's our error?" "Nah she'll be fine." Sometimes you win. |

Lots of good threads from last year for us noobs
I dont use aerospace for leather I use that for the dash etc, I use Zaino for leather but not sure if I would want to use it straight away in a new car cause its a leather replenisher so will mask the true new leather smell. If the leather can absorb a drop of water in minutes use Zaino, if it doesnt(plastic coated) use 303. I am not sure on this paint protection thing though, I think I will stick to liquid wax coats.
