The insurance premium thread
Thought I'd share my findings on insurance premiums from a few companies, as I've started the process of shopping around (well, I need something to do while I wait for delivery...)
To give some background - I have full no-claim bonus, aged 31, co-pilot's age is 29 (she also has full no-claim) and car is (will be) in a lock-up garage in a non-high risk subarb. All policies assume no limit on k's driven per year. Shannons - about $1800 Ryno - about $1240 NRMA - about $1265 I'd like to stay with Shannons as they've been great to deal with over the phone over the years, however $600 is reasonably compelling to consider Ryno (which I understand was started by some of the peeps who started Shannons). NRMA would be a contender as well, as multi-policy discount would kick in for my home policies, I just have a feeling (I haven't dissected the PDS's yet for each) that it's a bit of a "cheap" policy. That's being a bit unfair to NRMA as I've never used them before, it's just merely first impressions that I don't consider them a luxury car insurer. Would love to get other people's thoughts and ideas if they're willing to share  |

I have similar circumstances as you but am 47yrs old and live in Sydney..
The vert is always more expensive to insure than the coupe, one being it is about $10K more price tag and two it is a vert.. That said, I am insured with GIO $1450... |

Brisbane, over 30 rating 1, Suncorp $870 with free windscreen cover. 2 year new car replacement if written off. Done. thats for 135i, twin turbo 3.0 listed on description with options included.
But.... it says on policy that the car is not covered at all for a driver less than 30 years of age.

got quoted $1480 by NRMA, quite good considering that im paying about $1300 for my Jetta 2.0T.
Cant figure out why its such a small difference considering the large difference in price and power. |

Mini I'd probably put it down to claims experience. After all, my previous car (a modified WRX) was about 50% greater to insure, but worth half as much as the 135i.
Problem is all the kiddies who used to like parking them in ditches, in trees, upside down... |

Plus you cant compare Sydney Insurance prices to QLD..
We have discussed this in great length months ago on a previous thread.. Unfortunately Sydney is Sydney...and you pay for it through the nose.. |

Hrm, interesting to see the comparison for different groups and states.
I acknowledge everyone's different, but each contribution helps build a better picture of what prices are like for different groups or regions. Any chance of making this thread sticky for people to read and compare perhaps? |

I wonder how much excess do people like to have in their policy?
If I get a 135. excess + more excess = total excess then the annual premium is $ $500+$0=$500 $1,097 $500+$150=$650 $1,038 $500+$250=$750 $980 $500+$550=$1,050 $921 $500+$1,050=$1,550 $804 $500+$1,550=$2,050 $586

I always have a large excess... if I have a bit of damage, I can handle shelling out a grand or two to get it fixed... it's only if I write a car off that I would want insurance to get involved.... just my opinion

Best quote I got was $2400. And that was BMW insurance. Shannons who i'm with now were $2800. I'm 28, full NCB, in Westmead, Sydney which is the contributing factor Right next door to Parramatta which is one of the worst Suburbs for car insurance.

I've heard good things about Allianz. They give you your choice of repairer and use genuine replacement parts. The same cannot be said for NRMA (both cases) and AAMI (wrt parts). But don't take this advice as gospel ... check the fineprint.

$1380 with Shannons for my 125i. Agreed value ($70K) as opposed to Market value ($54K). 2 year new for old replacement. Choice of repairer. 1 excess-free windscreen claim per year (any windscreen too, not just the front). I'm in a medium risk suburb in inner Melbourne where the car is garaged.

Well I haven't given Allianz a shot, might call them during the week if I need a distraction. Will let you know how it turns out. I really should call Shannons and see if they'll compete with Ryno...
