New M5 and yummy mummy

Day 1 back at school and I saw this beauty pull up behind me .... Interesting "frozen" paint finish but looks like a bugger to keep clean. Anyway, the lady obviously had an itch to scratch or was digging for gold As it was quite a chilly afternoon she sat in the car idling for about 10 minutes.... the music that M5 generates is simply awesome.

Interestingly the first f10 m5 sighting I had was also frozen grey, and driven by a woman, who actually looks like the one in your photo haha (this is in Melbourne mind you). Haven't had the chance to hear one up close though

Nice find.

What was her reaction when you pointed your phone/camera at her while she was up to her 2nd knuckle

Same. Its not really that exclusive either as quite a large number of old bombs that have lost their clearcoat look very similar.

BMW has a reputation for shithouse paint jobs anyway, its probably supposed to be glossy

I think it looks amazing. Photos doesn't do frozen paints any justice. Seen a 6 series grand coupe in a private launch somewhere and it looked amazing.

I suppose it would be poor form if I said to the owner "wow nice car but what happened to the paint job? Nothing a good buff couldn't sort out."

Joe's mate had an Aventador in matte black. Looked stunning!
I think it's all about the lines of the car.

I saw a few frozen black and grey M3s in HK last year and they look terrible when unclean.

From what I have read, there is still a clearcoat, but the clearcoat is made to absorb light. This gives the matte finish. If any abrasive (polish, clay bar etc) is used it changes the reflective properties of the clearcoat, creating inconsistent a finish. Also it can't be repaired easily. Repairers have to try to match the finish with various levels of hardeners on test sheets, but entire panel always has to be re-done.

Gloss looks way better IMO
Yeah that's correct. It's a clearcoat but you cannot apply much pressure on the matte paintwork. You can still wax the matte paints but again, light pressure. For the average person, it's not easy to maintain.

I was going to get my whole track car done in matte or satin black.
We tested one spare panel and it looked decent!

In the end (after 6 months, before he sold it back to Lambo Aus ) he was on the verge of having a 3M film applied over the whole car, as it was a BITCH to maintain the frozen Black paint.. He said, never again..

Well, boys, I will provide a running report on the Frozen Grey as I'm seeing the car every day. Might even get chatting to the mum

Are you sure that isn't a "loser" sign she's making? Just wondering :-)
