Radiator fan running on full blast all the time
Other morning I drove to work (3 miles) and it was 69 degrees, pretty cool. When I parked, the radiator fan was running on full blast. I stopped and restarted the car, and the fan was still running.
I have since discovered that when I start the car up cold, the fan won't come on, but it will come on after a few minutes of driving, regardless if the AC is on or not. Anyone experienced this symptom? I'm going to be replacing both the water pump and thermostat, but wanted to see if someone has seen this issue before. |

There is a setting in the JB4 which makes the fan run full blast at all times. It's called MAX cool mode. Check it and make sure you don't have it enabled.

Curiously there's no codes. Just saw there's a way to output the water temp to the fuel gauge using the jb4. Gonna see what temps i get later with some further testing. http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10605 |

1) Put the key fob in the ignition, press start button to turn on the electrical system but don't start the car. In other words, keep your feet off the clutch/brake pedal. 2) Move the temp setting on the A/C to full heat, and turn the fan to the lowest setting. 3) Hold your foot down on the gas pedal for 5-10 seconds. The water pump will start to cycle on and off for several minutes to prime the system and remove air from the hoses. Once it starts, you can remove your foot from the gas. Leave the car door and hood open so you can check to see if the water pump is working. You should hear it running, and you should see water pissing into the reservoir from the thin hose connected on the right side of the tank. If the pump sounds funny or you don't see spay in the reservoir, your pump is dying/dead. Just remove the key to stop the process. If you plan on letting the water pump continue the priming process, make sure to hook up a battery charger. Running the fan and water pump at the same time will drain your battery in no time. |

Water pump! Be careful! I give it a week before you get the 1/2 eng light and your car shuts off.

Thanks for this, you're a smart man. Quote:
That's what people are telling me! Luckily I am heeding the warnings and the 1er is safely parked in the garage awaiting a water pump and thermostat. Really glad I didn't get stranded and need a tow, looks like I'm driving the e36 for the week. Thanks for the input guys, I'll report back once I've swapped out the water pump to confirm it was the root cause for my symptoms. |

Water pump is about to leave you stranded somewhere unless you have Max Cool turned on if you have JB4

This just happened to me as well. I noticed when I parked the car last night, the fan was on full blast, but didn't think much of it.
Drove to work this morning, noticed a flat spot in power in 3rd gear, but no failures or warnings. Put the window down and turned the radio off to listen to the car, and noticed the fan was running full blast again. Started to suspect water pump problem. Eventually got a yellow temperature warning, coasted to a stop and parked the car for 10 minutes. Restarted, drove the rest of the way to work very slowly. Now I'm debating on getting it towed home or limping it home through the back roads... Mine lasted 98k miles |

Changed the water pump and thermostat, fan is back to normal, issue resolved. That top bolt on the water pump is a major PITA with big hands, but otherwise, the install was pretty straightforward.

Good ol'water pump failure.
Mine failed just last week (79k) in the recent SoCal heat wave. My cAr was showing the same signs for a couple of weeks prior. |

I wonder if this could be a relay issue maybe, but I'm not familiar with the electrical system there if it's always on or always off on the non-switched side. |

Right when I turn it on it starts blowing. I've been struggling with this issue for a while and I'm unsure what the cause could be. |
