Crazy Highway Engine Malfunction

On the 805N today, cruising in 3rd in the stop-and-go traffic when suddenly it feels like I hit something. I look around and see nothing near me, and notice it does the same thing again a few more times, each time it does the indicators both flash at the same time. Now I get the "engine malfunction" warning on the i-drive screen. I try up-shifting to keep the revs as low as possible, but it still continues to jerk / sputter violently. Keep in mine I have 9k miles on this N55, and have had the Procede V5 on it for the past 4k-5k miles or so.

Any ideas before I go to the dealer and they claim that my mods caused the issue?

Might be the high pressure fuel pump going.

Might be. I thought that would just be a loss of power and not as violent though.

My N54 did this one time on the highway. Were you able to apply any power after it happened? I was doing about 80, went WOT to get around some yahoo and it shuddered and then wouldn't go over about 60. I pulled over, turned it off, rummaged around in the trunk for the manual to check how dire the engine symbol was and it was fine once I restarted.

I scheduled service and was able to reproduce the effect with WOT again, and it cleared after a minute or so of power off and restarting. It was the HPFP, which was replaced and the next one lasted about 2k miles, but the one after than has been going for about 6k miles so far.

I could apply power still, but not much and had to keep the revs low as it went into limp mode. Would still buck/surge at almost any speeds above 40 though. Haven't started it up again yet as I'm at work now.

Good luck with your issues! I'll be looking forward to hear how the dealership handles your car, especially with the Procede. Hopefully it's just the HPFP and they don't give you too much of a hard time.

I wonder if it's time to start a sticky discussing N55 HPFP issues?

I talked to a tech at the dealership today who's a big BMW modifier himself, so he said to just leave the stuff on because he's not going to say anything about it. Makes it easier in that respect...assuming it's the HPFP, which they've gotten down to a science of quickly swapping out by now.

Hi There, I have had two similar issues since installing the V5 Procede. I have a N55 as well.

I am not running the latest DME, and was advised by Procede here down under that this is likely to be the issue.

Proceed have recommended coming in so that they can wind the map 1 boost back a bit until I get the new DME.

Be interested in hearing how you go as we sound like we share the same problem.

Check the codes with your procede and what DME are you currently running?

FYI... when the engine miss fires... it feels very violent, like you just ran over something and the whole car shakes really bad. It is nothing like an engine miss in a car say from the 90's or 00's. I'd say you have a bad spark plug/coil pack/fuel injector or even HPFP. Just take your car in and have them read the code. It will be saved in the car's DME.

Talked to the tech working on my car today, and he says the only code / problem he's seen is an intermittent problem with the crank position sensor. Interestingly enough, I talked to Vishnu yesterday and they said their shop car also had to have that replaced under warranty.

Makes me wonder if it's an N55 commonality or a Procede commonality.

Well remember that the crank code is always on with the n55 and procede. Next time try and run the codes before you clear them.. There have been a few of us with valvetronic limps

I didn't clear any of the codes as the tech is well-versed in Procede equipped cars.

So you limped it home and to the shop? Sorry for the questions, just trying to better understand the situation

Car is still in the shop. Crank position sensor was replaced, but the wires were damaged in the processed, so it took them another day to diagnose that issue. Hopefully the car is coming home today, but it's getting a software update as well, so hopefully the performance won't suffer as others have had after the update.

^Performance usually suffers on the n54 at least thats what has been posted. Not so much with the n55. And besides its best to always have the latest since thats what shiv tests with.

Either way, I'll have to update the Procede firmware today; make sure everything's in sync

Now the only issue is that with the new DME update (even after an update to the newest Procede firmware/maps), there's a service engine soon light that stays on for roughly 10 seconds on each start up.

Shortly after getting my 2011 135i last March, maybe after I had 7 or 800 miles on it I experienced one episode of this half power business you describe. I shut it off and restarted it and the problem went away.

I was going to take it in but I forgot to do it because the problem never has re-occured. I now have almost 5K on it and no problems at all, so I'm not going to worry about it. it seemed like a fuel problem to me but it's gone so ....

Yeah. Shiv is suppose to address this with the new update that is coming out.
