As noted here multiple times the non sport auto is the car of the masses. Nice ride decent power and handling and the one you can get the cheap lease on and drive a BMW instead of a camry or accord
Enthusiasts will buy the sport pkg manual trans car. This car will handle as well and probably better than your 135 and be rewarding to drive. No it wont have the power or brakes but the same chssis engineering is there. Remember last gen uplevel 3 had 225-235 hp same as current car and going back from e30 to 36 to 46 each got bigger smoother faster and slightly less involving driving experience. The brand moves more mercedes each year as mercedes moves more BMW. There is some loss of identity as they are now all pretty much competing for same buyers instead of keeping their own niche

I don't see how a company like Merc with virtually zero manual transmissions to offer can be anything like BMW.
I get a 328xi every time my car is in for service and I definitely don't enjoy driving it but it's better than nothing. I don't think anyone is upset that they were loaned a 328 while their car is getting serviced, it's a critique of the car - not the loaner program. The car does feel more planted to the ground in the turns compared to my stock 135 but the power is frustratingly absent. The AWD also drags heavily on performance as it feels like the little engine that could when trying to overtake on the highway. Standard leatherette seats are also quite uncomfortable. Is it a fine automobile? Sure... but it's not the car for most of us on this forum as we're the enthusiasts, not the masses.

on the other hand, the big fluffy mercedes, dealing only on stately looks and fancy interiors and a soft cushy ride has now gotten some edgy styling, more sport tuned ride, and offers the AMG division of products. Same is true of audi, once the bargain brand, good car, with a volkswagon interior that sold on the premise...hey we're just about as nice as a bmw inside, offer a decent drive and ride balance and do it cheaper...they abandoned that added price and sophistication and have taken on mercedes for interior quality (and probably surpassed it) and continues to add rear wheel bias to it's quattro to impinge on the sport side of BMW. While i agree the BMW in rwd form is still the best driver of the bunch (why i have it), it's only by a little bit now, where they've lost some edge, picked up some luxury, and other brands have done the opposite.

I think that's reflective of the shift in the customer base. Growing up in the 80's, I would very rarely see a BMW, Audi, or Mercedes growing up and I've lived in Westchester & Fairfield counties my whole life. Now they are EVERYWHERE. People were also content with stripped down cars that did nothing but drive because they did not know of anything better. Now people want leather and navigation right out of the box. Airbags and reinforced cabins are required by law and with each new "feature" the weight of the car increases. Hell, the cars that I grew up with barely lasted 10 years before they were just dead. Now even a Hyundai has a 10yr powertrain warranty. We just expect MORE from our cars than every before.

I dont think so... Last time I looked on another make's build your own site you can order mostly the same stuff as you can get on a BMW. To BMW's defense, you can order a car with practically nothing in it except for power windows, locks, and airbags. If you want a decontented car, it can be had.

That's what I find frustrating about Lexus and attractive about Acura. Acura is pretty smart as the only options you have to choose prior to the car being ordered are MT/AT and Navi/No-Nav. Everything else is done at the dealer. Lexus has packages that go up and up and are all inclusive of all other options below that package. There is no "I want this but not this."

I don't think anybody is complaining that they get the 328 as a loaner. It's just a comparison/review opinion. I did the same thing not long ago and got flamed as a 328i hater. My only issue with the 328 is that it just does not fit at all with BMW's "Ultimate Driving" image, or even the lame "Joy" one. There is no joy in that car. It's just like driving an Altima or a Malibu. |

So I finally got to try out what everyone seems to hate....a 2011 328xi loaner while my 1 is in for hpfp/injectors/seatbelt/reprogram.
I have to say, I don't get the hatred. Maybe all of you are turbo boost junkies, but the NA i6 in the 328 is smooth as butter and it has more than enough power. Mind you, I don't daily my 135, and alternate between a Mini Cooper S and an Acura MDX, the 328 was a very welcome change. When it got boring, I put it in DS and either let it hold gears and drive aggressively or went up and down the steptronic gears. In traffic, I slipped it back into D and just putted around effortlessly. My loaner has PP/CW/328 value package and to me its perfect. It also has the Logic 7 (or upgraded stereo) and it sounds great. I could do with xenons but honestly this as-is would be a great daily driver for me. This engine is probably more durable in the long haul than the N54 will ever be.

328xi is probably what you would get in Canada, but you can get a 335i for the same price in the USA
328xi + a tune + 6MT is a very solid car.

I just got a 2011 328i hardtop convertible as a loaner. The car is gonna be different from the 1er no doubt. Like people have said previously, I personally wouldn't want a better car or feel like a deserve a better car as a loaner unless I was looking to buy that car. I like the feeling of getting my own car back and how I enjoy it more than the loaner by far. That being said, I am enjoying the convertible aspect and the crazy hardtop aspect of it (never been in a hardtop). Either way, I have driven every 3 series model, couple of 5 series models, and some x models as loaners in the past. All have their ups and downs and have allowed me to experience an array of BMW's lineup. Still love my 1er though. |
