BUYER BEWARE: PYSPEED --> Customs Brokers

first of all yes i have read the stickied topic at the top of the page

so i just got a call from Connor Anderson International asking me if i would like to engage them as my customs broker for the wheels i bought through pyspeed...

now as is my understanding items with a purchase value (not including shipping) under $1000 will not attract customs duties etc.

my wheels were shipped with Pilot Freight who i can see are "international partners" with Connor Anderson but i cant help but think that they are just trying to make some money off me that i dont need to spend..

in the past any order i have bought from non car related online shops have shipped via usps and were way below the 1k threshold and as such did not attract any customs duties..

in principle my wheels should be the same, yes?

so i put it to those of you who know;

Do i need a customs broker?

Hey mate, few questions:

What was the Customs Value of the package?
What was the international shipping price?
Was the international shipping price for door-to-door or door-to-port?
Have you ordered anything from the same vendor recently, and how long ago?

Cheers

so according to the info i got from pyspeed
they were shipped 6/10/2011
Product Subtotal: $849.00
Tax: $0.00
Shipping & Handling: $450.00
Discounts: -$30.00
Grand Total: $1,269.00USD

i cant see on pyspeed's website as to what their shipping jargon means but when you go to check out when purchasing an item it says Shipping & Handling then quotes the price which in my case was $450...

i have spoken to a few of my mates who regularly buy parts from all over the place and they both agree that because the wheels themself will not attract the 5% duty (being less than $1k) i should tell the broker to get lost as i shouldnt be getting pulled up by customs...

i just want a second opinion and you guys seem very knowledgable

You do not need a broker, at all.

Tell them to get stuffed!

This could be them applying a massive loophole.

They add in 250 dollars worth of handling fees in Australia. As per my sticky, that pushes your Customs Value over 1k as it's inside Australia. Then you're due GST and duty to pay, to which they handle everything.

I suspect sneaky sneaky here, I wouldnt even talk to them.

i am on the phone to them now..

Edit:
i am never buying anything that isnt shipped via USPS again

$75 lodging fee
$260ish for airport fees etc

dont want to sound racist but i couldnt really understand what the indian fella i was talking to was saying, which only pisses me off even more...

i told them that i didnt want to engage their services but it seems that the items are being sent to Connor Anderson International brisbane office who then forward to me once i pay their ransom.

motherfuckers

This is an issue you need to take up with the shipping company and pyseed.

You obviously never agreed to the extra cost, so you don't need to pay.

Don't give in on this; it's a disgraceful act of extortion.

Call the shipping company right now and give it to them.

The other option is a courier. Unless you are sending things in bulk, using a shipment company generally going to cost you the same. Places who send lots of things via courier usually have very, VERY good rates which is comparable to a postal service.

Anytime that you have to clear things from customs will cost you money, ie only buy from people who either use a courier or postal service.

That really sucks mate. As everyone has said, I would call shipping company and ask them what the hell is going on? Furthermore, if indeed a customs broker was required, why did they appoint one, a partner in fact, rather than giving you the choice.

I really don't think you should pay their ridiculous extras. US$450 was quoted by tirerack.com to ship 4 wheels and 2 tyres for the Porsche. I split the packages but that was the initial quote for the whole lot. Gets to your door in approximately a week!

i have emailed pilot freight and asked them why it wasnt shipped direct to me.. hopefully i get a response..

if not i am going to contact the freight forwarder/customs broker and ask for contact details for someone at pilot

if that doesnt work i am going to set tay loose on them

if that doesnt work i'll just pay the money and bag the shit out of pyspeed at every opportunity...

at the end of the day ~1500 for a set of wheels isnt that bad but ~1200 would have been better

so i have spoken to connor andersons brisbane agent Cargoclear International and they were very friendly etc in stark contrast to the sydney people i spoke to..

so i am looking at a $286 fee to take possession of wheels and the reason for this is due to the way in which pyspeed shipped my items --> Not via USPS but via Pilot Freight..

no notice of which was communicated by pyspeed otherwise i would have opted to ship via USPS..

so, word to the wise, do not buy anything from pyspeed unless you can tolerate poor customer service and hidden fees

Tay - do you want to update your sticky to include the difference between shipping companies, and couriers and postal service as well?

Generally speaking, you use a shipping company only if your freight is at east 4-5 cubic metre as the custom fees (including clearance, port fee etc) are generally $300-$400 regardless of size up to a container load.

Ie, for most of the things we buy overseas - always cheaper to use a postal service, or a courier such as fedex, ups, dhl etc.

While we're on customs fees, etc, I had a set of tyres delivered from TireRack last week. How long should I give it to bring another set in without drawing the ire of customs and having GST slapped on the shipment due to have two shipments close together (although both are under $1000)?

If they've already been delivered you're good to go.

If you want to be safe, have them sent to your business address or under your mrs's name.

As long as it is not regular and systematic, you would be fine. Especially if the shipment is for 4 tyres each.

I've been stung the same way by a different company. Irritating and exactly as you say .. ransom demand.

+ 1 on this happening to me early last year. It's bs.

I was in the group buy for 18 CSL wheels from Alufelgen and when they finally arrived in Australia they were held up in customs. DB Shenker was the shipping company and they refused to deliver them to my door until I paid them whatever they wanted. My wheels were under $1000 and I didn't know how the system worked so I had to cough up the dollars. I finally got my wheels but it left me with a bitter taste.

I had a similar experience with Fedex but in that case my tyres that I ordered were held up in customs and they did a Quarantine check which I had to pay for. I understand the Quarantine check a lot more than the pointless fees that DB Shenker charged me.
