New tyres

Hi All,

One of my rear tyres blew out this afternoon, literally there was a loud bang as I took off and luckily was able to limp home (<1km).
The tyre is beyond repair.

Any recommendations for new tyres on the 1M?
I don't think I was ever sold on the Pilot Sports, I'd prefer something better (more grip) for daily driving and the odd track day.

Anyone happen to have something in a 265/35/19 size in Melbourne I can get as an interim?
I'm assuming most other tyres I'd have to get from o/s so an interim might be the way to go.

Hankook RS3s seem to be the go for the best stree/track tyre. I believe it's aimed more towards track but definitely should be streetable. Not as nice as PSS would be for the street though. Best person to ask would he @Ian///M as he's tried them both on his 1M.

You should be able to get a set local for around $1200-1400 probably.

Jeez you're lucky you didn't damage the rim to drive that far on a blow 35 series tyre!?!?

How much tread did she have left and what brand of tyre was it (was it the oem tyre?)

Love my RS-3's. Have 235/40/18 and 265/35/18 setup. Bought from Micky at Tyrepower Hawthorn. Bit over a grand.

Yes, a bit hard riding, and lower wear rating. PSS better for street, RS-3 better for track.

When you said you don't think you were ever sold on the Pilot Sports, does that include Pilot Super Sports?

My rears will need replacement shortly and I'm getting PSS.

I was parked on the side of the road and can only imagine there was some debri there. The tyre made a loud bang. Not sure if the rim is damaged, haven't had the chance to drop the wheel in to VANS yet. Tyres have 19k km on them so they were almost down to wear indicators. OEM Michelin Pilot Sport.

I'm considering the PSS, ideally I want something with more grip at low temps. Most of the time I do city driving and got really tired of the original Michelin being pretty ordinary when cold. I found the grip level was much higher on a track when warm. So a more track focused tyre probably isn't what I'm after. Only cause I'm sick of having no traction on the way to work. I'm hopping the PSS would be better in this scenario.

Sorry to hear your predicament, bro.

I think your rationale is entirely reasonable. Since Michelin PSS is effectively the reference standard, you would lose nothing by fitting this (default) street tyre. Even at your capable level, you would lose almost nothing by fitting this street tyre for circuit use - as has been demonstrated - unless there is something you are hiding

I was thinking if it was the oem tyre perhaps talk to your dealer, and say your rear tyre exploded doing 80 km/h and you almost lost control of the car would they replace the defective tyre?

More grip at low temps would be a Dunlop ZII application.

ZIIs LOVE the cold. However they do tend to fall off in the hotter temperatures.

All tires have tradeoff, IMO if you want a track tire pick one to suit 30 minute stints and compromise on DD...

ZIIs will fall into this category, but you might experience reduce grip in the final 5-10 minutes...etc depending on ambient temp and driving style

Ended up getting Michelin PSS to replace both rears.
Initial impressions, they're greasy and a heap of fun! As expected for the first couple hundred km's until they wear in. I think they seem quieter too.

Had to go with 275/35/19, it was the closest to oem size in stock.

I have 265 PSS on mine and they are pretty good in heavy wet twisties. You shouldn't regret it.

Ok, so only 17's on a 125, but I'm looking forward to replacing the original runflats with Michelin PS3's this weekend (205/50/17 F and 225/45/17 R). I had PS3's on my pervious Golf GTI and loved them as a great value for money tyre. To sweeten the deal, there is a $100 fuel card for buying 4x Michelins from Jax at the moment.

I am thinking of hanging onto 1 RFT to use as a spare when heading out of town. Anyone with a used 1 series 17 x 7J or 7.5J rim in Sydney that they are trying to get rid of?

No issues with rubbing, but yes I'm on standard suspension.
