BMW M150d
It would be very interesting with a M150d. Just imagine the 5.0d engine in our 1Ms. Would be quite interesting drive. Just assume it would be to much torque for not going "x". Going "x" would mean the pros/cons with weight and would probably have the potential to kill the "fun" of the 1M. But would be quite interesting experiment... ;-)

I get what he's saying. If BMW would put their new 3L tri-turbo diesel and xDrive from the new M550d into a 1 series, we'd have an RS3 killing machine from Munich.
The problem would (as always) come with cost and ability to sell in volume. A M150d would easily break the $65k base MSRP barrier and in a lot of ways would be BMW's version of the Nissan Juke R. A man can dream though! |

Going 'x', what does that mean? Do you mean 4 wheel drive? Personally I'm completely not a fan of 4 wheel drive but I know it does have its place.
It would be cool to drive a 1 series with that tri-turbo diesel. More hp and ridiculous torque. Redline would be lower but our engine isn't real happy going to redline anyway. Between the two I think I'd take our motor though. Less expensive, lighter, higher redline and currently easier to mod. If that motor did become more prevalent I'm sure there would be a lot of mods for it too though. It would also probably get better fuel econ. Can't imagine how hard it would be to keep tires on it |

AWD certainly has it's place in performance cars if the torque is appropriated...appropriately. |

Yah that's what I figured. Took me a lil while, hey it's early!
I've driven a lot of all wheel drive cars over the years but for me they just don't have the same visceral appeal. I do understand if you live in an area of inclement weather they can become a necessity. I just like a proper 3 pedal rear drive car is all. |

Nope. I don't think any of it would be a good idea.
a.) You would create an understeer monster. b.) 4wd is fine and dandy if you have classic lsd diffs. The 'Xs' I've driven so far share one special usp. You never know what the car is going to do in the next corner, depending where the electronics transfer the power. Is it going to try to be a fwd, a rwd or a 4wd car? Drive the corner and find out. Drive the same corner 'n' times and appreciate a different handling each and every time. That doesn't make much of a difference in a heavyweight, those cars aren't built to be driven near the edge. But in a relatively nimble fun car... no f***ing way! I like what I have read about the tri-turbo Diesel so far. I'm seriously interested in an X5 with that engine. Do I want it in my 1M? Nope. Not at all. Neither as a 4wd 'X', nor as a rwd. My 1M is fine as it is, thanks.

Interesting thought though. Lets remove xDrive from the discussion. The 5.0d engine in the 1M car?
Or more probable in F20 generation. Would it be possible to build a 1M car with a diesel engine that is as fun? I know its offensive idea to many. But the mileage and monster torque... Need some sound engineering I do agree. But I actually really like the thought. Even if you start throwing hard things at me! :-) |

Some food for thought...
•Engine: Six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology, aluminium crankcase, three turbochargers (high-pressure, with variable turbine geometry), common-rail direct injection with piezo injectors, maximum injection pressure: 2,200 bar. Displacement: 2,993 cc, output: 280 kW/381 hp at 4,000 – 4,400 rpm, max. torque: 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) at 2,000 – 3 000 rpm, specific output: 93.6 kW/127.3 hp per litre of displacement. |

Have you guys seen the cutaway picture of the turbo assembly? It's utterly beautiful, genius, and insane at the same time. I didn't know they were using VTG as well, that's sick!

Yes that is a good point. My gut feeling says it will be a hard engineering to create something as fun as the 1M with the 50d engine. But if there is a company that could it would be BMW.
Have to admit I have not driven any of the Audis below though... ;-) |

That's what I was thinking, an electrically powered "turbo" with no connection to the exhaust to provide intial boost and throttle response while traditional twin sequential or a single dual-scroll turbos spool up to provide the sustained boost.

God I am so addicted to this engine and its technical complexity. BMW needs to release some sort of video or animation showing how this system works!!!!
