I just placed an order and have some more info about the alarm. Apparently it will only be available as a factory installed option beginning with 3/09 production. No more dealer/self install!

The feature code is "302 Anti-theft alarm system" and the retail price is $400 (USA).

I am still lost about this whole alarm thing. I realize that my car does not have an audible alarm. Is that it? What exactly am I missing?

Yes - the chirp when locking, blinking clown nose, flashing lights, siren if the doors or trunk is openend while locked, motion detector inside the vehicle. Also, it allows you to roll down the windows and open the sunroof (or convert top) by using the metal key in the door lock.

What? The part alone is $254 from Dan@United. Dealer install quotes are about $180.... Are you sure that includes parts?

If so... please let us know the dealer name- I'll drive to LI for a day for that price.

The convertible alarm is $150 from Tischer.

The coupe is more.

I went ahead and added it to my order at the invoice price of $365.

I got my alarm from Dan for $160 when they had it onsale, and my dealer install/program for $282. So that is $442, I think the factory install is a good price also the factory alarm have interior motion sensor and tilt alarm sensor.

Got mine installed parts and labor for $375 with my car purchase so it's covered by the full 4 year warranty.

The 'vert alarm is not that great, but the blinking light and chirp might lower the probability of a smash and grab.

You need Convenient Access or the Alarm. I should have mentioned that. If you don't have Convenient Access, then you need the alarm. This feature is called "Convenient Operation".

Wait? So I get to hold my key in the door and stand there for 22 seconds rather than press the button for 22 seconds? I do not see the advantage of that...

You can open the windows, but not close them with the remote (non CA). The metal key in the door lock feature simply is a way to open or close if you don't have CA without having to get in the car and doing it the regular way. However, if you don't have CA, then you need the Alarm for this feature.

The BMW model is good, and does not cause any false alarms, or sirens going off for no reason. Normal operation works with unlock or lock buttons on your remote, you never really know it's there. However, it affords some peace of mind, especially if you live in high crime areas like I do here in Vancouver. The blinking clown nose at least warns a crackhead car thief armed with a couple of spark plugs in a sock, that if he smashes my window it is going to hurt his ears. Maybe, just maybe - what is left of his chemically potholed brain will register and make him to move on the the next car to find something that he can sell at the pawn shop for $20 = his next two coke rocks.
