Drifting 325i

Last weekend at Orlando Speedworld in Florida.

Everything is 80mph+

Pictures don't do it justice, hopefully there will be a video.

Didn't want to kill the RE050 run flats, and I had a set of old 18s laying around with cheap new 225 hankook tires.

Also, being a 325 with only 215hp and an open diff isn't conclusive to being able to spin the sport package 255 rears.

^^^yea i was thinking the same thing.

You would need more power, and more than power a LSD.

Lame... I drive with far bigger drifting angles on my way to work and back every day (although only when it´s raining which it does all the time over here)

You think I´m kidding ?

Only if you rely on brute power for the oversteer. If you increase the entry speed and destabilize the car with load shifts, even 316i power is sufficient for drifting and even spinning. Power and LSD just make it easier (OK, you actually need an LSD for very long an controlled drifts).

You can even drift FWD cars if you know how.

Power oversteer is for beginners...

Power oversteer is for beginners... that know how to release the right kind of neurotransmitters. Looks to me like Will is having one h*** of a fine time. 80mph on dry pavement is a nice touch. Wish we all could get that kind of track time.

For those of you that want to learn how to drift the easy way start with some snow and spend a long time with the DSC totally off.

Off topic, but anyone on the list done more than 19.5 360s in one go?

Like I said, pictures do not do it justice.

If you were to see a video (if I can find one), or if you were there you would have seen that all of the drifts were initiated at over 80mph just to be able to keep the car sideways throughout the entire turn of the oval.

This track is typically used for nascar.

This is not power oversteer in a parking lot, an open diff cannot initiate power oversteer.

Anyone got info on what type of limited slip difs are the right stuff for the E90?

And any advice from Will on the right way to learn those kinds of driving skills? And any comparisons with other cars that you have driven in those conditions?

Yea, the photographer must have had a killer camera because it looks like it's sitting still, but I was seriously hauling ass to get the car sideways.

First time I've driven an E90 and I'm very impressed. My E36 was better than most any car in the chassis dept. but the E90 makes it feel flexy.

Yes I could have probably entered in 4th gear at around 100mph with the 255's in back but BMW's generally understeer at the limit, and I like a balanced feel. PLus I doubt the open diff would have kept both 255's goin.

With something like a 51/49 F/R weight distribution, I think the 225's all around were very nice. Especially since the rear spring rates I'm sure are tuned with 255's in mind. The car had great balance for drifting with that tire choice.

I honestly was amazed how well the car did with open diff. I attribute it to the stiff chassis, suspension and swaybars. Even when I put the right rear into the banking a few times (running wide from the crazy entry speed) a little bit of clutch work kept both rear tires going nicely even with the bite from the banking.

No sign of one-wheel-peel all day

Cheers,
Sean

Actually at that time, Sean (FreeThinker) was driving the car.

There were some aftermarket options for the e46, I have yet to look into anything for the e90.

My suggestion would be to goto a wet skid pad and drive around a 30 foot diameter circle with the rear out as far as possible for a couple hours. That's the fastest way to learn car control.

The oversized rears do not seem appropriate for the 330/325. Maybe the 335 & M.

Yup, trierfreund is a valuable member here who knows his stuff and obviously takes his cars very seriously.

Nice drifting and the car does look like it's standing still.. cameraman must have used a very fast shutter speed. Any videos of this yet??

I'm gonna guess he didn't want to shred the expensive run-flats. Those could be loaners from an e46.

E.g., "Hey, I'll give you fifty bucks to let me finish those tires off if your done with 'em. "

Personally, the only drifting I'll be doing in my e90 is on an iced over parking lot. I can't imagine that's good for the drive train.
