2 weeks old - cracked windshield

Tractor trailer in right lane, slow moving car in left lane. I'm behind the car in the left lane trying to get past the tractor trailer when I see a rock shoot out of the tractor's wheel and watch it as it strikes my windshield. Chipped & cracked just below my line of sight.

Talk about aggravating! When I bought my 2000 328i the same thing happened to me in the first 100 miles of driving. That windshield cost me $600. I'm expecting the same.

Still though, I suppose it could've been worse. That rock was the size of a golf ball & it could've really done damage to the body of my car if it hit.

Does anyone have experience with those glass repair places? I'm not talking about replacing the windshield, but seeing if they can repair the crack / chip.

look at this thread. it has a lot of useful info about glass repair.

also, if a rock as big as a golf ball fell of someone's car/truck/whatever as i was driving, and especially if my car was hit, i'd have 911 dialing instantly giving them the plate number of the asshole. that's some serious road hazard.

The stretch of the turnpike where it hit is an area under construction & the lanes narrow down a bit. I'm guessing the rock was actually part of a pothole - otherwise it wouldn't have been so big.

Feel your pain bro. Delaware has a stretch of Rt. 1 that is a piece of shit and I've had damage to every windshield in every car within a 5 mile area. Don't you have comprehensive insurance? Even though we have a low deductable, our insurance usually dosn't apply it windshields and we've had them replaced at no cost before.

EDIT (okay, RANT) - and how do you like those assholes that won't pass a truck!! They get right along side it and then sit there like dolts, leaving you stuck at the rear of it. It's usually a woman driving. Don't they realize the most dangerous place on the road is next to a truck?

My insurance company repairs dings/chips in our windshields for free (or at least they did the last time). They calculate it is cheaper to pay the small amount of money to have someone come out and patch the windshield, than to have to replace the whole thing in a few months when the chip/crack gets worse.

You might wan't to contact yours to see if they do the same.

How did you guess. It was an older woman driving a very large car blocking the left lane. Granted, it was a construction zone and the speed limit was reduced -- but she just sat there riding along in his blind spot.

I'd have better luck reaching God himself on the phone than I would someone sympathetic to my situation at the NJ DOT.

A pot hole opened up here like 2 weeks ago from previous work done on the interstate. It was HUGE, people were blowing out tires and bending rims, it was on the news. They were told to file a claim with DOT, then 2 days ago, they were told the DOT will not pay.
