I haven't driven in snow in 10 years so I forgot about the grime it leaves.

It could randomly happen if your key needs to be charged and a low voltage situation takes place. Do you have keyless entry?

Well, believe it or not, the trunk light came on again last night. I got out and checked it and sure enough it was open, even though the trunk lid wasn't raised at all. What is going on!

My trunk lid on my 128i did this yesterday morning. Got in the car to back out of the garage and the trunk was indicating "open" on the dash. Closed the trunk lid and then I had a right front "low tire pressure" warning. However, tire pressure completely normal....
Got to love all the tech they cram in these cars. |

I am thinking there may be some long term issue with BMW trunk releases going on here. My 2000 540i has a habit of doing this as well, probably about 2-3 days per month. It's always in the morning that it happens, and I am quite sure it is not from accidentally hitting the trunk release button after becoming hyper aware of it.
Personally I am thinking there might be a grounding issue starting to surface. Most switches and relays in the automotive environment rely on ground pulse actuation to function. Basically, when you hit the switch it momentarily connects the desired device to electrical ground in order to complete a circuit. If one of the vehicles connections to ground is getting corroded and losing continuity, it can cause all sorts of strange issues like this. I would take a look around the trunk and see if you can find any ground connections. If you do, take it apart and clean it the hardware, as well as the body where it connects. It may not look corroded, but sometimes corrosion can be a very fine film. A dremmel tool with a wire wheel works great for this, or wire brushes. Putting a little dielectric grease on the connections will help prevent future corrosion as well. It's probably not a bad idea to check the connections at the battery etc while you are at it. |

Not to worry unless you have a body in the trunk.

I had this happen to my car several times. My last service before my warranty was up i brought it up to my service adviser. He actually had them change out the entire locking mechanism in the trunk.
That was about 2 years ago... I have had it happen to me exactly once since then. So... kind of problem solved? |

Ground issues can be extremely difficult to pin down, and weather conditions can at times affect such a thing. Sometimes things are balanced just on the knife edge of whether they will work, or not, and any small variance in conditions that normally would seem completely irrelevant can affect the outcome. I've seen much stranger things happen with bad grounds before. |
