2010 G37 to 2010 135i M-Sport 6spd

I was a proud owner of a 2010 G37 sedan. I loved the car, but I wanted a manual because I have only driven a stick before this car. I just could not deal with the fact that the car is not totally in my control. So, I started looking for 6mt G37 coupe's and sedan's. One day my sales buddy from a BMW dealership calls me and tells me he just got a vehicle in from lease. It's a fully loaded(it has every package BMW offers except the upgraded sound) Black on Black 2010 135i M-Sport 6spd. I was never a fan of the way the 1er looked, but when i saw this car with it's M style body panels and interior pieces, i loved it. After driving it, thats when in my mind I decided, this is the car that truly fulfills my driving needs! My buddy hooked me up by talking to his manager and selling it to me before it was even listed as 'for sale' at the dealership. So, I got a 2010 135i M-sport fully loaded with 30k miles for 28,500. I still think the G coupe looks sexier than my 1er, but its the way the 135i drives, the G cannot match up to it. I feel so much more connected with the car and the road in the 1 compared to G. There are also other minor things like the poor paint quality and the way the door sounds when you shut it (Sounds like I am closing a cheap Toyota door) in the G37. I am not here to bash the G, I am just saying that it shares too many parts with Nissan cars and I don't want that in a luxury car.

Happy driving!

I've had a 2013 135i M-Sport 6-spd for a couple of months. Years ago I had a 2003 G35 Coupe with the manual tranny. My wife currently drives a 2010 G37x sedan...nice car.

The 135i, especially with the 6-spd manual, is in a different class. The n55 engine is a work of art...sounds so much better than the coarse G37 engine. The G hauls butt, but the sound is not my cup of tea. I also have the BMW performance exhaust and that is an incredible addition....sounds fantastic!

One's impressions of sounds are a personal thing. Having said that the G37 is frequently criticized for its engine note. Below is from Edmunds....:

"Driving Impressions

The 3.7-liter V6 found in the 2013 Infiniti G sedan is quite strong and provides quick acceleration. While we're not fans of the coarse noise the engine makes in the G37 at higher engine speeds, for the money, you can't beat it in this class."

+1 The G's exhaust is very nice, but only people that are behind the car or outside the vehicle get to enjoy it. Even with the windows rolled down, not much I can hear. What I hear more of is the engine and though the VQ37VHR is a wonderful engine, past 5500RPM, its coarse, unrefined, and ignorantly loud (not in a good way). The N54 on the other hand is buttery smooth and I just want to rev it more and more to listen to that beefy twin turbo inline 6. My dad drives a 528 with the N52 and that thing is even smoother than the N54! The power delivery from the N52 is so linear. Nevertheless, engine wise, BMW is still a step ahead of Infiniti. This is coming from a guy who used to love the G37.

Agree all the way. As said, we're on our second G. Above 5000 rpms though it sounds like a bucket of bolts...

My wife drives it mostly and doesn't rev it out, so it's not really an issue.

The VQ is one of the best stock sounding engine/exhaust combos of all time.... never heard anyone call it "coarse" before. Have you had much experience around Z/G's? Cause that statement above is blowing my mind.

Also, OP, WELCOME! Congrats on the purchase, both are nice vehicles, but from an enthusiast standpoint, I think you will be more than happy with your purchase!

It's a taste preference. Like a choice of exhaust, each one has a different note.

Maybe the G37S has a different exhaust tone? I love the sound of the "burble" when downshifting on my buddy's G37S.
If you bought a G and didn't like the exhaust tone, why did you buy another?

The G is an excellent value. My only constructive criticism is the engine is coarse at high rpm's. It's not enough obviously, to prevent me from buying one as mentioned above, we're on our second G. I greatly prefer the sound and the smoothness of the N55 over the G37. As you said, and I wrote earlier, sound is a matter of preference, it is subjective. Others on this thread don't agree with me, some do, numerous sites that review cars have commented on the coarse engine sound at high rpm's, including Edmunds. I'm not aware of any car that is flawless.....

For sure, I just had no idea there was so much criticism for the exhaust on that car. At least it isn't the fake engine noise

He is not talk about the exhaust! He is talking about the ENGINE NOISE. Completely different things. The G/Z stock exhaust notes are pure sex! The engine however produces are very unrefined, harsh sound above 5500 RPM.

Exactly. I have been part of the Z/G crowd for years upon years with multiple trips to Zdayz and Z Nats....What I was getting at was the engine/exhaust combo. I had an 06 HR 350z and I know the harsh noise you're talking about, but the JWT pop charger along with the Vortech kit made it not as bad.

Lastly, Edmunds can say all it wants... I have met thousands of VQ owners who LOVE the sounds, compared to a small handful here.

None the less, we're on the same page now I guess.

People here will argue about anything...

Congrats on the purchase! Before I got my car, I was seriously considering a G. The drive, as well as the relative rarity, of the 1 series won me over.
