Engine fault
I read the post on the CEL, but I think it is different than the Engine Fault where the message tells you the car has minimum power and to visit the dealership. Anyone experience this? My car had this at 4800km and it went away for about 100km and now came back.
Any info on this would be much appreciated. |

What is the problem you are having? Engine Notfall program? aka Limp-Mode.
Something like this... Or an engine check light or SES (service engine soon) ???

Engine fault: Full engine power no longer available. Possible to continue journey. Drive moderately. Have the problem checked by the nearest BMW service.
It clearly feels like a massive loss of power. |

Thanks, Pete. Will look into the charge pipe. Don't get to drive the car much --5000k in a year and this happens - very frustrating. I will take it in as soon as I can get an appointment and then report back as to what they find. Although they speak some English, when it comes to technical issues I can't understand half of what they say and the invoice is worse.

Many thanks to all for the replies.
James_1M: will mention the knock sensor to the service advisor. Will try and find a translation in German. Artemis: Thanks for the added link - will read with attention. Stratus650: Same speed and when turned the car off problem went away --temporarily. Happened again at low speed. Hope yours was only an electrical glitch - Bad ass color BTW! |

These pictures show exactly what happened to my car tonight. I was at a traffic light, M button was pressed, booted it for less than 10 seconds and the light came on after that. Could it be the charge pipe? I just hope it's not the fuel pump. |

Does this sound like the knock sensor issue? If I plug in my OBD scanner, will any codes pop up?

You need to read the car's DME fault memory. It could be anything. Yes, it could be a cracked CP, but it could also be a hundred other things as well. the FIRST step is to have the fault memory read. Not all OBD-II scan tools are created equally. You need one that can read BMW codes as well as the generic OBD-II codes. BT scan tool would be one that can read all codes. Or those coding (can/bus)cables sold on ebay would also be able to read them(with the right SW). Maybe try using your SOS button and see IF bmw can remotely read the code? good luck, Dackel

I tried checking for codes with my OBD tool (ScanGauge 2) and got nothing. The issue hasn't come back either so I'm not overly concerned. I'll update this thread if it pops up again.

Had an engine fault + reduced power message 700kms into ownership - was the knock sensor. Mine weren't replaced though, the fault code was reset and hasn't returned. Now at 8000km
I have noticed occasional boost 'cut-out' (maybe 6 times in total) when under high load from low revs (2k) in 4th or 5th, no traction control. Only happens for a split second. Wonder if this is a lingering knock sensor fault? Last edited by Piets94; 06-26-2013 at 08:56 PM.. |

Well it went in to garage yesterday they had it all day...... They have changed 2 knock sensors... The tech that did the job said the ones that were on originally did not feel as tight as the new ones that he put on ( the bolts that hold it on). They need to be torqued to 21 Nm... It might just be in my head but the car seems to be smoother now , especially when getting on the gas!!!

I had the same thing, it is usually a high pressure fuel pump fault. The HP fuel pump is the same on 128s and 135s but 135s draw more fuel than the pump can handle so it faults from fuel starvation.
There is a recall on 135 N54s to fit with an improved pump. N55s have the new pump by design, but N55s built before Spring 2011 have the old pump and no recall so I was out of luck, BMW wouldn't do it under the N54 recall. They reprogrammed the car after joy riding it for two weeks and gave it back without issue. |
