BSM just went up for sale in my region
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...98464927&Log=0
Pictures look quite minty fresh, I think I might be starting to love the black. BUT- here is the weird part- it says 1-owner on the carfax, but it shows it being sold in March with 9,522 miles, and then 40 miles later sold as a CPO car (so fine, I think a Chicago dealer took it in and CPOd it and sold it). But now it is for sale by an independent dealer down here with 11,312 miles. How does CarFax look at that all and say "1-Owner"? I don't get it. Has it just been going from dealer to dealer? Did a dealer drive it nearly 2,000 miles? It has power seats and Nav which I don't want, but I've decided that I can swap the seats for BMW Performance seats (although I hear they are hard to find) and I read that the NAV system can be used to map tracks and keep lap times, so I guess that makes it kind of ok. For the mileage and apparent condition, it seems priced ok. I also am going to inquire as to the amount of CPO warranty remaining on it. But the 1-owner thing is bothering me badly. |

Looks like this costs $20- which I will definitely do if I look at the car in person and everything seems good- no point in checking before hand, especially when the car is local.

There is no substitute for seeing the car and getting all the detailed records which any reputable dealer and/or BMW (right off the key ) can find for you. You also can birth date the VIN and 1st sale date and the CPO will be 6 years from then, meaning probably a few years left, at least. Asking price for mileage is not crazy and cars like this have recently sold for $56K, or so, without the CPO. Good luck.

Just got a response from the dealer (again, not a BMW dealer) and he said the warranty is good through 11/19/16 for the bumper to bumper. Not too shabby, certainly helps me have piece of mind. This already puts them miles ahead of every other dealer I ever emailed a question to (and got the "please call us to talk more" response emails). They actually answered my question.

Good call. Interestingly, the original sale was 11/19/2011. So if you add 6 years, the warranty should expire 11/19/17 but the seller said 11/19/16. Apparently there is something called certified elite that only adds 1 year instead of 2. Perhaps this is what is going on here?

You may also want to be sure, if it gets that far, that the CPO is transferrable when the car is sold through a non-BMW dealer. I think that is something new but this CPO date may be before the BMW change.

Wholesale dealer is listed as Tom Hesser BMW of Scranton, PA...they did the PDI on 10/24/11 with 1 mile on the clock. Next service was done at the same dealer on 11/21/12 for "Snap-in adapter / telephone cradle incorrect connection /contact" with 4,306 miles. Next was done at BMW of the Main Line in Bala Cynwyd, PA...standard oil service at 8,325 miles along with the battery cable recall. Last one was done at Perillo in Chicago: Brake fluid flush, wipers, microfilter, "Sealing ring (O-ring) of refrigerant line Leaking", "Key battery, remote control permanent failure" and oil service done on 12/16/14 with 9,542 miles. Yep, that's what DCSnet shows!
MP 48 MO/050K MLS 0000000 ACTIVE 11/19/2011 11/19/2011 11/19/2015 48 50,000 16734 Tom Hesser BMW MP CPO 0000000023 CPO 72 MO/100K MLS 0000000 ACTIVE 11/19/2011 04/04/2014 11/19/2017 72 100,000 46786 Perillo BMW, Inc. UP ....and unless something has changed that I don't know about, the warranty (regular factory or CPO) sticks with the car, not the owner.

Under representation is good for you in negotiations, since the value is less. A CPO for a 1M today has an MSRP of $4k. It was probably about $3.3k back at the time the car was purchased. How did the car end up where it is? That may help you guess at dealers basis and determine a fair price, which again, I put around $56k. A number of cars at various dealers ended up at auction and picked up in other parts of the country by other dealers, typically non BMW, to see what they could do. My experience is these dealers work more from their cost than the supposed market.

I just PMd Shroom. He said he had looked at a 1M at Perillo at some point and had a PPI done and discovered it had a lot of paintwork done (i.e. accident). This car passed through Chicago, so I'm hoping he can tell me if its the same car or not. Perhaps it is, which would be a disappointment but perhaps explain why Perillo finally ditched the car to another dealer.
EDIT: I continued digging and found a thread he posted the results in- looks like it is for a different car (WBSUR9C59BVT47621) than the one I am considering (WBSUR9C59BVS96556). Still a good cautionary tale and reason to pay $150 to have it PPId, even if it is certified. Last edited by ThereCanBeOnly1; 04-22-2015 at 08:07 PM.. |

Hmm... I think I am piecing something else together too- the car was for sale in Chicago with 9,566 miles. Then without being sold to an end user it turns up for sale down here with 11,312 miles. From Chicago to here is about 1400 miles. Is it possible that a dealer would actually drive a car like this all the way down to Miami instead of having it shipped?

The registered owner if I remember correctly had a FL address. I can't tell you his name however, BMW wouldn't like that! My bet is that the first owner bought the car from Perillo although lived in PA (since most of the service was done there) and then traded it back to Perillo where it was certified. I suspect the second owner from FL is the gentleman now on BMW's record and he found the car online and purchased from Perillo and then drove or shipped the car back to FL where you now see it. Maybe he had to get out of the car for some reason, who knows? Concerning carfax...it can be helpful, but by no means is the final word. Unfortunately plenty of things fall through the cracks and don't show up on carfax or haven't 'caught up' to the car yet so to speak.

I'm hearing a lot of noise that Perillo cars are shady. No matter what, if I get serious about this car I will have a pro inspect it with a paint meter and do a full PPI, but if I look in person are there any things I can look at on a 1M to detect trouble?
EDIT: Jesus, reading the reviews on Perillo is making my peepee pull into my body. Now I am scared about this car having come from there. Those dudes sound scary as hell. Last edited by ThereCanBeOnly1; 04-23-2015 at 10:23 AM.. |

IMHO Just plain run from a used Peril 1M. The guy who bought it from them likely made an emotional decision without proper vetting of the vehicle. He probably discovered the damage/repair and he is now regretting and stuck in the car. While this is pure speculation, there are just too many clean true one or two owner cars out there to be had for a better price without the worry. Once the 2m comes out you will see more inventory be shook loose to choose from at similar prices to today if not a touch lower. Buy from a dealer and you pay a much steeper price.
