Wheel studs and alloy lugs

You've already heard this a million times, so once more won't hurt: replace your wheel lug bolts with studs and lug nuts...you know, like any other car in the world. Since it's easy to "wear" the threads in the hub, and difficult to mount the wheel with lug bolts, it's completely baffling why BMW sticks with this.

I used 72mm Macht Schnell studs, German made, very good quality. Get them from EuropeanAutoSource (very cool website)...avoid the ebay stuff; you might get some of that very brittle Chinese steel. Run a die over the threads to clean off the black stuff so you don't damage the aluminum lug bolts. Don't clean the "hub side" of the threads, you want as much grip as possible; use blue (medium) Loctite when you mount them on the hubs.

The lug nuts are Mishimoto, machined from 7075 aluminum, with almost 1 1/4" of threading; about 3 times as much as what goes into the hub with stock wheel bolts. Beautiful wide flanges and nice little knurling on the end to spin them on. Here's the cool part: 16 of the lugs are 6-sided, for a 19mm/3/4" socket...4 of the lug bolts are 7 sided and you get a special socket for them, the end is also 19mm...sweet! 7-sided locking bolts. Torque 'em to 75, no more...

The 7-sided lug bolt is at 10 o'clock in the picture...in case you wondered.

Nice. I m running 58mm motorsport hardware studs and nuts. Got them on sale. I like it easier to run different spacers if needed.

Garage List
Just put my studs in last weekend. Need new nuts though! I have the short ones that came with the studs. I'll look into the ones you have!
