2011 135i vs 2012 Golf R?

So I just sold my 2013 335i M Sport this past week, not sure why?

I am looking at buying a daily commuter (like a Passat lease) and then would like a secondary car for fun and such.

I am looking at the following 2 cars and want some feedback......Now I know we are all partial to the BMW's
But I am hoping for some real feedback....I will be looking to mod either car!

2012 Golf R 2-door Hatch, AWD, 6 speed. 19k miles and is a VW CPO
$28k

or

2011 135i M Sport, Coupe, RWD, 6 speed, 28k miles
$27k

I actually really looked into the Golf R. But I couldn't part with the RWD, so went from an E90 335i auto to E82 135i 6MT. Couldn't be happier, I felt like the fun factor was lost moving to the vw

I moved from an Audi S3 (which is very similar to the Golf R) to the 135i.
135i is much more fun.

I owned a 2011 FBO K04 A3 (TSI) and had a buddy who went Stock to Stage II+ (TB Exhaust, intake, intercooler, APR HPFP) to Stage III in a 2012 Golf R. My car was awesome, I loved it. His car was stupid fast at Stage III (like taking down 997 Turbo's fast). That said, I am in a 135i and don't regret much and now he's a 997 C2. The 135i is put together better than both of the aforementioned vehicles and coming from a 2013 335i, you will miss the solidity of the BMW. I say go with the 135i.

The Golf R doesn't get max torque until almost 3000 rpms and first gear only goes to 22 mph. The main complaint is that there is no power until you hit 3k and then it all comes and once and it can be hard to regulate. Definitely drive both they feel a lot different despite similar specs on paper. Also remember the Haldex handles like a FWD until the rear drive kicks in so it's all a matter of what you want.

Sold my Golf R to buy the 135i. Both great cars but the 1er is definitely better.

Yeah I test drove a Golf R before I bought a 335i and thought it was great. ......now after I had the 335i I went to test drive the Golf R that I am considering. ...and it is a cool little car but it's not a BMW

I am actually really on the fence. ... I really want a 550i or 550i GT. ...

So torn between the 2 car solution or just going with the 550i/550i GT CPO.

There is only the understeer that's similar to a FWD. If you learn how to drive AWD properly (i.e. stay in the throttle during initial understeer while powering out of corner\curve) the results are amazing. The Gen IV haldex that was in mine (pre-tensioned clutch) was flat out awesome. I could just hammer my A3 and feel the rear wheels bring me back in line. Straight line, NOTHING like a FWD. It hooks and books. You won't feel any front wheel slip or torque steer...even when the car is producing over 400 HP. At that point ALL FOUR wheels are slipping when launched HARD.

I never had any issue with power delivery. It, for sure, isn't as the OP describes. It is nothing like a 944 Porsche-style, old school turbo where the boost is like an on\off situation. It comes on pretty linearly and then pulls all the way. Tuned it's even better. Not hard to regulate AT ALL.

And before all the "fanboi" comments...just look at WTF I traded my A3 for.

Test drive the 550i GT. Looks great on paper. Driving it is another story. I had it on my list (even the 335GT) until I drove it. Pass.

I would say 135i all the way.

I can see why you sold the F30... those shouldn't really even be called BMWs. Golf Rs are still VWs and it's basically an AWD GTI for 35K... at that point, the EVO is a much better option.

I ended up with a CPO 550i sedan. Love it so far!

Although the dealer with the Golf R CPO called this week and offered me a great deal before it goes to auction...lol too late unless someone wants it!
