ZHP shift knob with original boot
Hi guys i just got a zhp shift knob and i'm wondering if i can use the original boot with it. the original boot has that clip that attatches to the ring which attaches to the shift knob. If that doesn'tw ork then I would probably be open to getting the bmw performance alcantara shift boot. Wondering if that'll work with the zhp. Thanks guys

I think it will work.even my e46 m3 smg knob fits the e30.
Also we test fitted my performance knob which I installed in my e46 without the alcantara boot first in an one series. Plus I read a thread of some guy who put the 1 series mtech knob in his e46.

Any BMW manual knob will work on any BMW shift lever from the early 80s up. In order to switch to a different knob but keep the stock boot, you need to disconnect the two. See my post in the DIY section. You may need to do some minor work in order to make it work. If you switch to the Performance Boot, it will work with the ZHP knob perfectly.

I used the performance knob with the stock shift boot.
They do not connect together but look perfect because the shift boot naturally pushes up against the knob and they look as though they are connected. Never had a days problem, they look perfect together. |

I did the same with my Whalen 2 1/13" red billiard ball shift knob. Looks OK in my book.

I just added the Perf Knob with the OEM boot. The base of Perf knob does not fit with the OEM shift boot.
The perf knob is round while the OEM base is rounded but rectangular. The oem shift boot will sag just a bit to where you you can see the separation. I do not like this and prefer not to hack or rig it. I want it to fit perfect. I am ordering the matching alcantara shift boot. I'm checkin with Dan@united to make sure the alcantara boot has the exact clips to fit with the perf knob. Look closely at the base. You can pull the boot down to reveal the shifter underneath: Will keep u posted...

The Performance Line Boot does not clip to the Perf. Line knob like the stock knob does to the stock boot. With the Performance boot, you turn the upper edge inside out and it butts up against the bottom of the shift knob.

I see, so you are saying that the Perf boot is completely detatched from the base of the Perf knob? Its just a fold-over?

Well here's an update. I did the mod and folded the top of the boot. Installed the knob and now it looks great eventhough sometimes it slides down and exposes a little bit of the metal underneath. I don't really know how to get it to always stay up there.

You can use a zip tie on the neck of the boot to hold it up if you need to.
