How you play your music

For those that DOESN'T have integrated bluetooth or iphones, how do you play music in your car with your phone? I have the HTC DNA and I found that I can not play music (like Pandora) via the USB outlet. It charges, put won't play. So I guess my options is AUX cable (don't wanna deal with cables) or getting one of those bluetooth adapter that plugs into the AUX outlet. Has anyone have any experience with something like that? Is there an aftermarket device that you can install to the stock head unit to make it bluetooth compatible?

Here is a bluetooth aux adapter I'm thinking about getting:

When I ordered my car, my dealership had a deal going on at the time. Order a new car, get leather and the iPod integration cable for free. So, that's what I did, and that cable is what I got. Bought my first iPod shortly after, and its been playing my tunes in my car ever since.

While that cable is stupidly expensive, a regular run-of-the-mill thumbdrive will do the exact same thing as an iPod with that cable. I know, I've done it.

So you cannot play pandora via the USB/aux jack adapter? Or do you not have the "Y" cable?

I just use the AUX cable. My car has no USB outlet or iPod integration. If I need to charge as well I just use an iPhone car charger. Not too convoluted or anything. Don't know how it works for an HTC phone but I would think that you'd need an AUX cable for the audio output because most non-iPhone phones don't seem like they'd be normally configured to play music out the USB.

You're right, I can't play Pandora. That's the downside.

To clarify. I do not have an iPhone. And I do not care to get an iPhone to use the BMW USB cable. I'm currently using and aux cable with my android phone. I was just curious what aftermarket wireless options are out there like using Bluetooth.

Also all my music is on google play (android version of iCloud but its free) or I use pandora. So I need to use my phone. USB thumb drive is not an option.

That belkin bluetooth should work and should keep your car nice and wireless.

Or you can go this route
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Retractable-Auxiliary-Cable-iPhone/dp/B000TMI17I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1360303541&sr=8-1&keywords=belkin+retractable+audio+cable

It'll fit nicely under the armrest

If you use only the sux cable and do not plug the USB in you should be able to play pandora. YouTube or anything else. Once I plug the USB in and the car reads an connects to it then it won't play that stuff only iTunes music but if you use only the aux it should play whatever coming out if ur phone even if its a voice recording. But normally I'm always streaming iTunes or youtube via Bluetooth through the speakers

Is there a way for us, with iPhones and 6FL iPod integration option (USB, AUX & Y-cable) to play music via bluetooth? I have bluetooth handsfree calling also (module in the trunk) if that would help. The reason being that'd it'd be nice to have my iPhone sitting wirelessly elsewhere in the car so my friends etc can scroll through the music while I'm driving or whatever. I like the iDrive interface but it's simpler sometimes to just use the phone menu's.

I've been using the Blackberry bluetooth music receiver for a few years now, works great. It's made by Blackberry, but it has nothing to do with Blackberry phones. It will pair with any phone. It plugs into the aux input, and is powered by the USB connection.

I dock my HTC Incredible to the left of the instrument panel, and it automatically turns on bluetooth and pairs with the Blackberry unit. Then I launch the SiriusXM internet radio app, and I'm set. Because I have a convertible, I actually get a better, more consistent signal than when I had the satellite receiver in my car.

I can play anything I want through the phone: Slacker, Pandora, my mp3s, or SiriusXM. And when I get a call, the dock turns on my speakerphone and the phone pauses the music.

I stream my iPhones iPod music via Bluetooth all the time. How new is your car. I don't think all them can do it

I purchased this when I first got my BMW and it worked great for $2.00.

http://www.amazon.com/MPI-Audio-Cabl...ref=pd_sim_e_1

That cable allowed me to charge the Iphone 4 and play music at the same time with 1 connection to the phone. However, once I upgraded to the Iphone 5 the cable was no longer usable with the new thunderbolt connection on the Iphone.

Update: They don't make the Blackberry unit anymore, there's the Belkin that others' mentioned, or this one http://www.amazon.com/GOgroove-BlueG.../ref=pd_cp_e_2.

Of course you have to get one that's for car use, so it can be powered by either a USB cable or 12V plug, or be rechargeable. Any one with an AC power adaptor won't work for the car.

So do you have the USB and the Aux jack under the arm rest or just an Aux jack?

If you have both, you can pick up a iPhone y-cable pretty cheap and pair it with this:
Ebay# 280933333961

For $9, i got wireless bluetooth streaming in my car as well as the ability to receive calls still through the BMW bluetooth. I am connected to both bluetooth devices at the same time. Sound is fine, just adjust your outbound from the phone and the inbound from the Aux jack and its perfect.

This sounds like what I am after, I use bluetooth calling all the time so I need to retain that function. How to you adjust the settings so you can connect to both the car and bluetooth receiver?

Just pair both. I paired the car before the iWave. It should auto-recognize both and put phone priority over to the car.

Tunes

It always kind of annoyed me that although my '09 (nav package) has bluetooth, it doesn't support bluetooth music....and I stream almost all my music.

So I filled the car's hard drive with music and slapped an old Sansa MP3 player with an 8Gb SDXC card in it.

I've pretty much found that the car reads any mp3 player whose file system you can see on my 'puter.

I hate plugging my phone into the car.

I gave up on the phone, doesn't carry that much anyways. 128GB USB thumb drive now, and love it, no plans at all to go back. True there's no Pandora or anything else, but with 100+ Gigs of music I don't really need it there.

Not an answer to the original question exactly, but maybe something to consider.

I am looking at one of these on ebay: USB Bluetooth 3.5mm Stereo Audio Music Receiver Adapter for PC Speaker Phones. It looks like I can plug in the bluetooth receiver into the usb for it's charging and then plug the 3.5mm headphone jack output into the headphone jack port. I should be able to pair the phone to this receiver for audio and the car for calls. It should work seamlessly since my Android phone pauses music when a call comes in anyway. I will let you know when I get it

I received the bluetooth receiver while driving a 2013 325i loaner car while my car is in the shop. The 325i has the nav package with bluetooth audio built in. I thought this would be a good opportunity to compare the sound quality of the built in bt audio to that of this $10 receiver.

I can't hear any difference at all. The $10 usb receiver that was powered by the usb port and plugged into the 3.5 aux jack sounded identical to my ears.

Set up was extremely easy. Just plug the usb stick into the usb port and the 3.5 audio wire into the aux audio port, pair and you are done.

It fit perfectly allowing the armrest to fully close.

This is what I got and it's worked great so far!! Perfect if you have the cigarette adapter under your center console.
