They are a tuning company that specializes in BMW's. Much like brabus for MB or ruf for porsche

Alpina was established in 1963 as a BMW tuner. Burkard Bovensiepen, the founder of Alpina, got started as a BMW tuner in 1963 with the 1500 sedan.

Alpina is actually considerd a manufacturer. Alpina became a Registered Automobile Manufacter in Germany in 1983.

Yes, they tune BMWs, but they put their own badges on the cars and have their own private dealerships.

Yeah, they are like RUF. RUF is also considered an independent manufacturer, although their cars are based on Porsche.
