Picture: Anyone else notice this in Navigation?

I've noticed that for many towns, two entries appear in the list when you enter in a town/city. They are the same town, but one is prefixed with "Town of". Strangely, only some towns appear this way while others only appear once with the name of the town and no "Town of" prefix.

I never know which entry to choose!

Nope, there's only one Orange in Connecticut. (No state can have two towns with the same name.)

It's also not just Orange - most towns seem to appear twice this way.

when you choice "Town of Orange"....it'll just nav you to the Town, another words..no street, road...etc.
but if you choice "Orange"...you'll need a street name..etc
I think..........

Ive seen a few strange entries (displays) myself. It has to do with the mapping company BMW uses.

But what would be the point of that? I can still put a city and no street,
road etc. select "start navigation" and it takes me there

Just yesterday, I was going to an address in Union, NJ. On the navigation, it showed:

Union
Union Township
Union (Union)

They are all the same place as the city of Union is a township within Union county. I was using voice inputs at the time, so I just went with the first one that they offered.

I have that same display for my home town. Both filter you to the proper streets in that town. I tink they are just serving you all options you may be used to, in case there are other similar cities/towns.

well, i have a similar problem but mine isn't with the navigation system, rather with the dumbass drunk-high tool who was validating street and township names here in pittsburgh. there are areas here where in a radius of 10 miles there would be two or three streets with the same exact name. then try to find the right one!

Germany is really bad for having multiple places with the same names. I cant even count the amount of times I've put in a location and had it come up with a huge list of duplicate names only differentiated by which German state they are in.

But to clarify, here we're talking about multiple listings for the same exact town. There is only one Orange in Connecticut, for example, yet it appears twice - and yes, with the Connecticut filter on.

Navteq's reply:

"The issue you are reporting is related to the functionality of your navigation system. NAVTEQ is the digital map provider for many system and software manufacturers. The navigation software (which includes route calculation, map display, colors, functions and voice commands, etc...) is solely created by a navigation system and/or software manufacturer. It would be best to forwarded your request to the company that manufactured your navigation software.

Please note that driving directions are generated by a host of factors including software algorithms, map content and individual system settings. The experience you reported could be influenced by any one of these factors. We are not able to identify a map error that would result in the experience you reported. We track items that we cannot resolve and evaluate them with our business partners on an ongoing basis to enhance our joint performance."
