Walked over by a 335D!!!

HELLO!

Is my 135i broken!?!

I was on the motorway doing 75mph in 6th going to overtake a 335d...he saw me overtaking and put his foot down...I did the same and my car had no chance!

Its a 2009 135, BMW performance exhaust and chipped, its about 340bhp on the dyno.

ugh????

You were in 6th, and who knows what gear he was in? And 335d is massively quick, especially if he has work done to it as well!

if he had a tune, then you really stood no chance because of his midrange, if he didn't have a tune then it's likely you still stood no chance because of his midrange. when I test drove the wimpy american version of the 335d (265hp detuned) I was very very impressed, in the midrange those f**kers haul!

That makes sense!

In the 135, even if you drop it down to 5th gear, doesnt make any difference from 6th.

Was VERY supprised!!! (and a little upset)

Thats insane. Can you imagine it now that they are upping the horsepower now? It's up to 306hp now if I'm not mistaken.

At that speed, I would probably try it in 4th gear. Though, it appears that you have a minor tune (340 bhp), so the above result not surprising at all.

I spent some time in a 335d writing an article for the local BMW CCA chapter's newsletter. It is sneaky quick. It has about 100 lb ft more torque at it's torque peak than the N54B30 engine and that's probably where the 335d was when you came across it - running smack dab at peak torque.

The 335d is rougher at idle, aurally, but then only slightly rougher. There's more vibration in the steering wheel at idle also. Otherwise you wouldn't automatically know it was a diesel. Where it falls short in comparison to the 135, 335, etc is the limited power band.

From a stop, a 335i will cream a 335d. But catch it at it's peak torque and you too will get to witness the awesomeness of Rudolph Diesel's invention. ; -)

335d has lots of torque over 135i, I believe if you were both in 6th gear - which is technically overdrive-, it should normally smoke you.

i wonder if the trans and what not is the same as the 135 and 335i. It would make me more comfortable in that the drivetrain can handle much more torque than the N54 is producing stock.

Torque converter is different - to handle the torque - the gear ratios in the tranny case are the same. The diff is numerically higher.

Hell, when I drove it I swore it had just a hint of engine braking on downshifts (which it really can't since a diesel has no throttle - that's why gawd invented Jake Brakes ; -).

With 425 lbft of torque I can believe that he smoked you. Especially if you left it in 6th, our cars don't pull in 6th, it is a cruising gear.

At that speed its an EASY decision to put it in third.
Third goes to 100mph. At 75mph you're probably just barely into the power band. In 6th you were turning like 2500 at 75.

Is your car an auto?
Maybe it didn't kick down?

With a tune there's no telling how much power he was really making.
With a turbocharged engine a little software adjustment can get you a much much faster car.
Tell him to return the car to stock and then race. If you drive it right I promise youll kill him no matter how much midrange diesels have. And, for the record, the N54 has fantastic midrange. I can floor it at 3500rpms in 3rd and be through the gear, now doing 100mph, in about three or four seconds. I do it pretty much every day on the onramp entering the highway on the way home from work.

Every 335d is an auto... you stayed in 6th, he kicked down to 4th and 400Ib/ft later was off

Try being in the right gear next time and it WON'T happen, believe me (unless it's remapped).

I would have dropped to 3rd, the pull from 80-100 is awsome in the 135i not far off 3 sec's dead

I actually disagree. I think the 135i is exceptional from a dig, 1st gear is amazing and 2nd gear pulls exceptionally hard too. I think that 3rd is pretty standard. Nothing a simple tune or reflash can't fix though

Torque does not win races. My old torqueless japanese cars used to spank comparable v6-v8 cars all day long. Torque is good for (lazy drivers)
I'd take a torqueless E90 M3 over a torquey E90 335I with JB3
Driving an automatic car with gobs of torque require no skills. All you need to do is press the gas you can't mess up.
Even with a manual tranny you can't really fall out of the powerband.
Bottom line is you can buy a fast car but can't buy driving skills at the local dealership
