Christmas Drive

Hi all.

My Mum lives in Augusta,WA, so I drove down there ob Christmas Eve and returned on Boxing Day. Yeah, not long, but long enough .

It's approx 315km. Anyway, I didn't want to push it too much on the way down, so just enjoyed the drive. Was a little put off by the fuel economy, was about 9.8 which surprised me somewhat considering that I get better than that on a freeway run, but put it down to the stop / start factor. It was scary how quickly you get to 80km/h if you don't concentrate in sub 110km/h zones!

Got to Augusta, Mum likes the car but couldn't car less about the gadgets fitted and couldn't understand why I 'needed' NAV as it was too distracting.

However, on the return trip, I came back up Sues Rd and gave it a bit of a run (thet's just leave it at that, huh) and then left it at that on Cruise Control for 50+km's until back in 'non-bush' country. Man, this car is fun to drive!

Some observations:

Wonder why there's no indication that cruise control is on?

When washing the windows from bug attacks, it's annoying that the water flows along the drivers side window.

The Pro Nav wildly over-estimates arrival time on long trips, my 3.5-4 hour drive was anticipated to be 6 hours when I first started. Weird.

I love this car! Was the talk of the BBQ lunch that I dropped into at Hamelin Bay, everyoine wanted a look and a sit in it. The CA's the winner 'gadget' too.

Here's a Google Map of the route for those not familiar with WA, maybe us Perthites should do a run down Caves Road one weekend:

Thanks for the trip report. Yes I wondered about the lack of a cruise control light as well, seems a odd omission. Also agree about the over estimated ETA of the nav system. I find that as you get closer to your destination if gradually revises your ETA to a more accurate figure.

I get about 1 extra hour added on to my 1.5 hour trip from Launceston to home when I first set out on my journey, by the time I am about 0.5 hours from home, the system has more or less corrected itself.

As a contrast, my portable Garmin GPS gives deadly accurate ETA times. I know my Garmin assumes you are going to be driving at the speed limit when calculating the ETA (it knows what the speed limits are on the route), and adjusts the ETA based on your actual driving speed when underway. As a result you get a accurate ETA even before you start your journey.

Pro Nav must use your driving speed only to work it out, I don't think the route speed limit comes into the picture. It probably takes a while to work out your average speed and apply this to the ETA calculation.

That's what I think anyway....

d3syd, thanks for your hypothesis, but I don't think so... I did think the same on the way down (maybe it would be 6 hours at 60km/h), but on the way back I was doing around double that speed at the beginning of the trip, so there went that theory. It must be calculating it at some arbitary number, google maps says roughly the same time...

I agree ProNAV is crap at estimating arrival time. Basically it needs to get there first before it can work out when I will get there. It seems to initially overestimate by about 50%. My Z4 was unfailingly accurate and even seemed to know how many coffee (and bathroom) stops I would need.

Is this Nav Pro in the original iDrive or the new 09 Becker iDrive? Would be interesting to know if they are both out by so much.

d3syd is right. It has the newest maps as well. My Z4 was the pro NAV and it is very accurate. I guess the old 1 series pro NAV and the new pro Nav use the same calculations just a different front end.

Speaking about maps, what's the story with a 2009 update? I am assuming that I won't be getting a disc in the mail with "Thanks for being a customer, here's your free update!" on a post-it-note?

My thread, I can drift it ...

'08 Bus Nav ETA is a bit more realistic. Still inflates around 10% compared to my accurate old Tom Tom, but still useful enough to give an indication at what time you can expect to arrive.

Funny as I dont have this over estimating problem with the Pro Nav...

It could just be a satellite positioning problem...

zuzu, have you checked it out over longer journeys? I find short distances are ok, but long distance ETAs are way off.

Not really..On our last trip down to Merrimbula from Sydney I honestly didnt take to much notice of the time to distance accuracy..

Better take more notice next time instead of paying more attention to the exhaust note..

Hey Simon

I did a bit shorter trip today. Went South West Highway to Busso then coast road back to Perth. 502kms all up, fuel consumption is 8.6L/100km!!!

I had cruise control set pretty much the whole way on the national speed limit, few overtaking situations where that limit may or may not have been exceeded but otherwise, just enjoyed the ride and I'm pretty happy with my consumption results. I think you must have been heavier with your right foot than you care to admit

Cheers
Dave

P.S. I just looked up the offical "highway" consumption number - 7.3L/100kms....i'll be buggered if i know how they got that number. Must be a completely flat piece of road with no traffic!!

I guess 140km/h may have had an impact on the fuel consumption, if I were to have been doing that for any period of time.

That maybe said, I did have the CC on too on the way down and was 9.something as stated. Anyway, not enough of a difference to matter.

Agreed, I reckon I could do that, with a very short run. Maybe it's over 100m and downhill? You know, they'll do anything to fudge the figures - the name of the game.

Anyway, it's better than the XR6T (in so many ways), so I'm happy!

Simon....

PS: Interested in a drive down to Margaret River sometime? Caves Rd should be interesting.
