Need advice on replacing HPFP
Hey. I have an '08 135i N54 and have been experiencing occasional spluttery performance.
I had the injectors done last year and now the mechanic says it's the HPFP. Are they still being replaced for free by BMW? And if not, as I think I got stitched up by the injector replacement, what's the cost on this? |

Unfortunately in Australia, these were never a free item unless you are still within warranty.
In the US they have extended warranty on the turbos and HPFP but we get nothing... It's bullshit. The cost of an HPFP is around the $400 mark give or take a bit. Installing it takes about an hour or two if DIY so if you want to pay to get it installed expect maybe $550-600 for the entire job.

The cheapest price I'm aware of for a new HPFP is $340 from ECS (+ factor in approx 3 hours labour I hear):
http://www.ecstuning.com/ES2189759/ If you want to go local it's $580 from BMR: http://www.bmraw.com/n54-high-pressure-fuel-pump-hpfp/ |

I've heard rumours that BMW Australia has replaced a few HPFPs for some local guys here for free.. does anyone know if there is some truth behind this or is it just a myth?
I think we as a community should make some noise and fight for this (even though I've heard its not as big an issue in Australia). My water pump just died a few weeks ago and now I'm dreading that the fuel pump will go at any time too. Absolutely love my 135i and BMW in general but hate the fact that I'm worried that the pumps will explode at any time and not be covered by warranty! |

If you are splitting hairs over a couple of hundred dollars then why are you driving this car? Get it fixed properly by an experienced shop and be done with it and enjoy the ride. Conversly, if you have bought it to tinker with or are a DIY afficiaonado then find the cheapest price on the 4 corners of the earth and have fun getting the part here as save, save, save. Many of us have had pumps done and injectors too. Thats performance motoring.

Didn't read your OP properly. If you just get occasional spluttery performance I wouldn't blame it on the HPFP yet.
I would try coils and spark plugs as well as intake valve cleaning first. If you start to get long cranks and/or stalling when starting up and/or misfiring at when pushing the car harder then you may have an HPFP problem.

A lot of symptoms for various issues overlap with each other. Even a misfire code could mean a few things. Also there's always the chance that you have more than one problem at the same time. If I bought used I would change the oil/filter, plugs and coils straight up. These things take up too much time trouble shooting. Best to get it out if the way. If it does end up being your hpfp I would give the Vargas hpfp a go with a walbro lpfp. |

My car is just a weekender, and this seems to happen every 4-6 weeks. Engine's not quite at optimum temp, mild acceleration, engine vibrates, loss of power, engine light comes on.
It's ok after pulling over for a few minutes, but it's happened twice in the last three weekends. Plus I can sense it being on the edge of letting go at other times. I'm certainly no DIY mechanic so that's the best I can explain it. The mechanic said after checking the computer it was 'probably' the HPFP, but would need me to take it in again. |
