Need advice on replacing HPFP

Hey. I have an '08 135i N54 and have been experiencing occasional spluttery performance.

I had the injectors done last year and now the mechanic says it's the HPFP.

Are they still being replaced for free by BMW? And if not, as I think I got stitched up by the injector replacement, what's the cost on this?

Unfortunately in Australia, these were never a free item unless you are still within warranty.

In the US they have extended warranty on the turbos and HPFP but we get nothing... It's bullshit.

The cost of an HPFP is around the $400 mark give or take a bit. Installing it takes about an hour or two if DIY so if you want to pay to get it installed expect maybe $550-600 for the entire job.

Garage List
2008 BMW 135i  [8.66]
The cheapest price I'm aware of for a new HPFP is $340 from ECS (+ factor in approx 3 hours labour I hear):

If you want to go local it's $580 from BMR:

I've heard rumours that BMW Australia has replaced a few HPFPs for some local guys here for free.. does anyone know if there is some truth behind this or is it just a myth?

I think we as a community should make some noise and fight for this (even though I've heard its not as big an issue in Australia). My water pump just died a few weeks ago and now I'm dreading that the fuel pump will go at any time too.

Absolutely love my 135i and BMW in general but hate the fact that I'm worried that the pumps will explode at any time and not be covered by warranty!

$340 is a good price, but yeah, gotta factor in shipping and exchange rates. It should definitely take less than 3 hours for an experienced shop to do though. It took me about 3-4 hours on my first go and I've never done this kind of thing before. On my second go I'd say it took a couple hours but it could definitely be done faster.

DIY it =)

Another indy specialist told me today that if I push hard enough they will do it out of goodwill - so I called doncaster BMW and they mentioned that they may be able to do something however I will have to pay the $230 diagnostic fee.

You had to replace the HPFP twice?? or I'm assuming maybe it was two different cars

First time was on my car. Second was helping out a forum member. It's a pretty straight forward job.

If you are splitting hairs over a couple of hundred dollars then why are you driving this car? Get it fixed properly by an experienced shop and be done with it and enjoy the ride. Conversly, if you have bought it to tinker with or are a DIY afficiaonado then find the cheapest price on the 4 corners of the earth and have fun getting the part here as save, save, save. Many of us have had pumps done and injectors too. Thats performance motoring.

Didn't read your OP properly. If you just get occasional spluttery performance I wouldn't blame it on the HPFP yet.

I would try coils and spark plugs as well as intake valve cleaning first.

If you start to get long cranks and/or stalling when starting up and/or misfiring at when pushing the car harder then you may have an HPFP problem.

+1 pay to play

If you do things smart you can minimize the costs by purchasing overseas and DIY

+1

A lot of symptoms for various issues overlap with each other. Even a misfire code could mean a few things. Also there's always the chance that you have more than one problem at the same time.

If I bought used I would change the oil/filter, plugs and coils straight up. These things take up too much time trouble shooting. Best to get it out if the way.

If it does end up being your hpfp I would give the Vargas hpfp a go with a walbro lpfp.

My car is just a weekender, and this seems to happen every 4-6 weeks. Engine's not quite at optimum temp, mild acceleration, engine vibrates, loss of power, engine light comes on.

It's ok after pulling over for a few minutes, but it's happened twice in the last three weekends. Plus I can sense it being on the edge of letting go at other times. I'm certainly no DIY mechanic so that's the best I can explain it.

The mechanic said after checking the computer it was 'probably' the HPFP, but would need me to take it in again.

Ok well that description sounds more like an actual misfire. Could possibly be the HPFP then. Also could be plugs and coils too though.

Are you modded at all?

No, didn't get any codes. Should I ask for them?

I only had it for a month before fitting it with a Cobb AP. That's it. I disconnected that over a month ago.

Sounds like a misfire aka what I'm going through right now....

After thorough research start with plugs then coils, then injectors

Run the car up on a Dyno and do the checks, fuel pressure etc with Autologic
then fix it, easy

I doubt that BMW would want to know about your car unless you bought it new even then you would have a battle on you hands. Good luck

I see your in Sydney, if we can help just give us a call
