I was lucky enough to grab the last build-out allocation in the region for my 135is. A small car with a big engine has always been my style. The 235i just didnt appeal to me at all.

In the US? Absolutely. They are marketing it a lot more. Does ANYONE remember a 1er commercial here? lol

peeps are buying A3 Sedans and CLAs now.....2008 was a different time. The only competition the 1er had was the A3 hatchback. The end.

i saw a 228 drive by the other day and it looked like a Civic.....no personality at all! the 2-series will appeal to....well......frustrated 3-series owners who have found their cars to be large. That's about all. i am really harsh about the 2-series, but i am one of the people who think the 1-series is fantastic looking and one of the last 'great' BMWs. The M235i looks soft as pasteurized cheese in real life....i much prefer the 135.
I've already seen a couple coupes in my area. I think if they keep pushing the marketing they will go. But the only 2s I have seen have been the 228i. I didn't like the way they looked at first, but after seeing them in person, I'm wowed! I don't like it at much as my 1 (obviously) but it has really clean lines; even the rear has grown on me. However, I do like the 2 pipes on the left of the 1er better. If only it came with the N51/52 and didn't have the electric steering I'd be all over that 228i!

Also, like you I think the 1 is one of the best looking cars BMW ever made. It looks like an updated E46 coupe. Nearly every time I park it I turn around and look at it because it looks so nice haha

i think the 2 will ultimately suffer the same fate of the 1, and its not becuase it's a bad car, but becuase of perception. The layman will say, 2 is less than 3, people will think i am buying the "cheap" bmw, and will thus default to the ever popular 3 series (now 4 series).

FWIW I auto crossed a 228 last weekend in NJ and I was underwhelmed. It under steered terribly and the ZF automatic transmission was dismal. the steering was terrible and the engine was boring.

I still came in 1st place in the autocross event....guess driving the 1er has made me a better driver for sure!

I did as well but I can only agree on the steering, it was too light for me but was very accurate. The engine had plenty of punch especially compared to the old 6. It didn't sound great from inside(too quiet) but from outside it sounded fine even cool with the turbo/bov sounds as people were beating on them. I thought the tranny did a good job despite it being in auto/sport mode for autox I would think the manual select would be best.

I think the 2 will achieve better success than the 1. It has less polarizing styling, a nicer interior, and is more refined. I wouldn't trade my 1er in for one but I could see myself buying one if I was in the market. What is tough for me is pricing they have gotten really expensive and there are a lot of performance competitors now that are cheaper.

to me the 4 banger felt almost exactly like the old A3 2.0T I had or any of the VW GTIs I've drive ....nothing special. Just a 4 banger turbo in the most generic mode! The biggest problem I felt with the gearbox is that it just, again, felt like any ordinary slushbox. if you've driven a dual clutch gearbox it is not hard to see how inferior the ZF transmission is compared to a true semi-automated gearbox like a dual clutch. Overall the whole experience of driving the 228 felt very numb to me....

Glad you were there to let us 1ADDICTS know what we're NOT missing! I test drove the M235i twice and came away very uninspired. Soft, dull and too big. The engine was the only part I liked and that's because it felt alot like mine but not what you'd expect from a revolutionary next generation engine that it should've been. I see no reason to pick it over my 1er. My DCT beats that auto easily and I can't drive a manual anymore because of a bad left ankle so that would be my only choice of transmission. I'm happy I bought mine after the lease was up.

More popular yes, but never better. The 1 is what a BMW should look like. The 2 looks more like everything else out there from every other manufacturer.

I think the 2 will be more popular as well. They made the ascetics main stream, and with the AWD coming more people will buy it. For me I will keep my 135 till death!

For what its worth:

I went to BMW dealer to test drive cars while in service. Sales guy was VERY knowledgeable about each model, specs etc. He said flat out he didn't like the 228 and that they sold MAYBE under ten at the most of the 2 Series since they came out. He said the 1 series was a much better more respected car that sold "MUCH BETTER" according to him

He said the 2 Series is selling absolutely terrible and the hottest cars are the x5 and the 4 Series.

I agree with most of you, the 2 looks too main stream if you can call it that? Just like a smaller version of a 4 where as the 1 has so much personality.
