Ask for a job sheet when you pick up the car.

Gawd I love BMW 'free servicing'...

me: "so what does it include"
dealer: "as part of the corporate program bla bla you get three years servicing"
me: "sooo.. brake pads, oil filter, oil?"
dealer: "no those are consumables it doesn't include that"

The only reason it changes colour is because its burns/cooks; it burns because it is not adequately cooled.

When ATF is burnt it loses its viscosity and therefore its ability to lubricate. It will also cause itself to overheat quicker and quicker, causing more wear of the internals.

Any lubricant that are subjected to heat cycles will deteriorate as time goes by. Bad quality oil will lose its cooling, lubricating and cleaning properties quicker than a good quality oil.

Another indication of bad transmission fluid is smell.

In having said that,Since mr bmw says it's lifetime oil? Does that mean that if we do change the tranny fluid outside will that void the warranty? As mr bmw will never touch the tranny fluid unless it really show signs oof gearbox oil is buggered?

How can changing a consumable be voiding your warranty? That's like saying a brake pad change will do that too.

What does a tranny service consist of? There didn't look like much in the way of serviceable bits to me in fact didn't look like you could see any moving bits :

On another note, BMW dealer replaced the transmission fluid and gasket of our X5 after a suspected mechatronic sleeve leaked. I believe this is a common problem for BMW.

Just got my car back, it was oil change, brake fluids, microfilter and "standard service" items whatever that means.

Total for service: $0

Service car: $39

Because I asked them to install pedals for me (which cost me ~$120 in labour). Their explanation: due to the non-warranty job the service loan car was not free.

BMW free service

OK so you get a free service every 20,000km for 4 years that is fantastic, now do your self a favor and do a service every 10,000km at your cost, then when the warranty runs out you can with some confidence hang onto the car. Don't wait for the on board system to tell you to service your car. But i guess if its a lease car who cares just flog it to death for 3 or 4 years and hand it back.

Why should you worry about the poor bugger that buys it down the road.
I for one could not afford to purchase a new BMW for a $100,000 + so i just hope my next used BMW has had some love, so far i have been lucky.

I totally agree with you Skycat. I've always been on the Corp program and always do interim oil changes out of my own pocket. I don't care what BMW say about their long life oil. My own perception is that I can feel how much smother the engine is with an oil change after 10,000klms and perception is reality.
