Senator Fielding,

I’m disgusted that you have caved in to the pressure to pass the LCT tax, without taking this opportunity to make it fairer (if that’s possible with regards to a tax on a tax on a tax) for people who already pay PAYE, Stamp Duty, GST, Duty etc etc etc.

Shame on you,

Simon…

These so called independent Senators are clearly not independent. What does Fielding and Xenophobe get out of this for agreeing to this increase? What little backhanders do they get and will we ever get to know? Of course not. These are gutless dweebs that couldn't get a real job, could've made a real difference to this car tax business; stuff the Henry review, get in and do some real good for once.

There's an old saying among military guys: The enemy is not the other guy in uniform; it's the politician in your own country!!

I'm getting really sick of this government. The pendulum has swung so far left it's not funny. The whole government is infested with union officials.

So glad the Libs have won in WA, wall to wall Labor is just not healthy no matter what your political persuasion.

Hopefully Malcolm Turnbull will do good for the party. Never know, Rudd might be a 1 term PM....

Farmers already get a whole slew of benefits & concessions from the government.

In my opinion they should have at the very minimum raised the LCT threshold.

I don't see why the tax is even required in the first place. The people with the money get taxed when they make it in the first place. Its just the government being greedy and double/triple dipping. Its not like farmers are any different to anyone else, we all get shafted by the tax.

Now I can understand employing a tax to minimise harmful things like CO emissions or smoking, but to base it on price and not emissions has no merit whatsoever.

In saying that it isn't going to change my purchase choice in any way but it is still annoying and unnecessary.

It's a "Tall Poppy" Tax designed by the Labor government to curry favour with the heartland of their supporter base - the so-called "battler" who hates seeing anyone doing better than themselves. It's highly unlikely the poor are going to be upset seeing the not-so-poor get a come-uppance.

We're all "battlers" but on different levels.

Battler is so 90's. It's "working-families" now...

I believe I even heard "working farmers" the other day.

I feel really good that the ~$2000 I am paying in extra LCT is going to the pensioners, the roads, the Nationals. Or is it? More chardonnay, Kev!

I've settled down a little after my initial tirade. Not that I'm happy with what's happening, but as someone else alluded to, if you pay $90K for your 1er, the additional LCT is $1,650 - not a huge deal - but annoying nonetheless.

What does really concern me is that it demonstrates that "these" 2 "independants", who have the power to determine some of the important decisons that impact us all, are clearly so "purchase - able". You can bet there's been a deal done, and you can be just as sure that it'll be over something earth-shattering, like artificial insemination of the yellow-nosed, pidgeon-toed frog.

Senator Fielding - you're weak! And you don't desirve a position of responsibility, as you clearly don't take enough interest in issues to understand the full implication. And that make you dangerous!

Rather amusingly though - the two concessions that Labor has made are completely contrarian: The greens get a break on low consumption vehicles, the farmers get a break on their massively inefficient trucks.

So basically it's a zero sum game for the environment - GO THE GREENS, they're not just labor lackeys after all! Oh, wait... My bad, they are.

I'm personally very fond of the way that those massive mobile vision impediments (4WD's) are subject to a lower rate of import tarrif than cars. So all the ML, LX, Landcruiser, Q7, Hummer owners are getting a tax break.

Nothing quite like a bit of consistence in our policy makers. And, not that I'm a greenie, but it does make a bit of a joke (no, make that a lot of a joke) of all the BS that's flying around about how concerned the current govt is about the environment. Not to mention the $ that's also flying around in the name of envir- friendliness.

Here's a funny one to contemplate ..... a colleague who has a long history in the power industry, and understands carbon footprints much more than I care to imagine, tells me that if you measure the total life-cycle carbon footprint of a Toyota Prius, which includes everytihing from raw material, manufacturing process through to recycling it when it's dead. It's about the same as an SS Commodore. This is becaue after 4 years, the Prius owner has to buy a new battery for about $4K, and the old battery is such an enviro disaster, that it offsets everything else - what a joke!!!!

I got a reply from David Chehade Policy Adviser for Steve Fielding.

Thank you for taking the time to contact Senator Fielding.

Family First is concerned that the increased car tax would unfairly hit farmers and tourism operators - especially when they are already doing it pretty tough. The vehicles they use are not a luxury but more of a tool of trade.

I thought you might find the attached interview from the ABC Lateline program of some value.

What a joke and a waist of time.

+1

Got the same stock standard reply. He's supposed to be "family first" ... unless your family happens to need luxuries like a toyota tarago ...

Good news (for some) is that I heard the Libs were pushing for an amendment to make the LCT increase not apply to vehicles purchased before 1 July, even if delivery was after. Read this in the fin review, but can't find it on the net anywhere else...

What the hell do farmers want with 'luxury' vehicles anyway.
