Yes, you need a cable that you should expect to cost about $100, it has an interface built-in. I got mine from onestopelectronics.com. You also need NCSExpert software. For battery changeouts, you also need INPA, I think.

I've watched postings about less expensive cables but they always seemed to end in "doesn't work" or "doesn't work right". I'm not saying it can't be done, only that I have not seen somebody who ordered a "$20" cable post that they have successfully run NCSExpert and code a car.
The cable I purchased has an adapter to do at least a couple types of bimmers. That wasn't important to me, however, I just care if it will work with mine. There is a decent pdf talking about what sort of cable you want on the onestopelectronics site. Jim
