You guys have me searching car-part daily. As soon as i find one semi-locally that fits the bill i'll be picking one up. Unsure of if i want to do the install myself still, but i'm planning on doing the manifold+tune all at once for ultimate seat of the pants difference.

LOL yeah it looks like something i could handle it's just a larger job than i've ever done before. Should be easier to take off my intake too, since it's a pipe and a hose clamp.

90% of car work is the willingness to try.

There are certainly things that are hard to do(header install on a E39 M5 comes to mind), but our cars are especially easy to work on. Because we have none of the turbo plumbing of the 135i, but the same engine bay, there is loads of roam to work in. BMWs in general are also pretty forgiving to work on.

My 128i is my first bimmer and my work has consisted of 2 oil changes and one brake fluid change so far - so very limited. I guess I also messed with the dash to install my garmin on the dash if that counts. I've been impressed with the electrical connections and general tidyness so far. So I am not very experienced but it sure doesn't look like there is lots of room in the engine compartment. It's all relative but I used to borrow a pickup where you could literally stand beside the engine if you wanted to (the fenders were tall so the owner did sometimes to tune it up). My bimmer is nothing like that. But I agree it is mostly doing some research and trying (or even just jumping in). It helps to have a backup plan if you need a part or tool that you don't have late at night when you are trying to finish, however. (I've overhauled engines and transmissions on previous cars along with lesser efforts)

Considering there is room for a pair of turbos, all the assorted plumbing, oil cooler, and intercooler, we are pretty spacious, at least in terms of German sports cars.

And yes, I have a '54 Chevy where you could easy stick another two engines in the bay. Amusingly also has an inline 6.

Yeah we have a good amount of room in our engine bays compared to most bimmers and cars in general. Is there a core charge for the tuner evolve sends you? Thats how it worked with previous tuning company's i used on my jeep.

No, it's your cable once you buy the tune.

It's pretty kick ass too as you get full code reading/clearing with it as well as easy future tune updates.

Thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these used intake manifolds soon. Any advice on the best way to clean and prep it for install?

Ditto!^ I read through the DIY a few times but it's confusing making sure which work and which don't. i search carpart using an 08 x3 and it brings up all matching parts numbers, so that helps. I'm searching for a <40k miles on one, so it's similar to miles to my car.

water and car wash soap.

1) unscrew all "sensors"
2) pull out the disa, if you damage the rubber gaskets it is oka. I used some rubber cement to hold a few pieaces in place
3) with the bare manifold, wash with water first. Pressure washer can work here
4) soak in soapy water
5)shake manifold with water inside to rinse. repeat 3-5. I used a sponge to clean inside as much as a could. Some e39 people used a dishwasher, i didnt want to risk.
6) some film/oil residue may still remain.
7) inspect current manifold gaskets, decide if you need to buy new. You will damage old ones when you pull them out.

Just get new gaskets and engine bolts. No reason to risk it for $30 and then have to do the entire install again.

Yeah, new bolts & gaskets are definitely going in. Just want to clean up the manifold w/o risking leaving behind some sort of residue or something.

There really shouldn't be much to begin with unless it was sitting around in a parts bin for a bit collecting dirt. It is a closed system that goes through a filter when mounted. For mine it came directly off the donor car, I plugged the holes with shop rags for transport, and then mounted it directly to mine.

What about the vent hose (p/n 11617559530)? Did you need that part? I read that was only for the 325i->330i conversion, just wanted to make sure. And how about the "throttle body seal ring" (p/n 13547522361)? Turner lists it as part of their kit but Tischer does not. Thanks.

BTW, the manifold pictured in one of my previous threads is on it's way to me. Supposedly came out of a wrecked 2011 328i N51 with only 5,605 miles on the odometer, out of Washington state. We'll see!

I used my stock vent hose. I can see the 325i ->330i conversion needing it because they had a separate oil return unit mounted to the manifold, while ours is integrated into the engine.

Throttle body seal ring I didn't notice frankly. That said, if it fails it is a very easy part to replace. I certainly would have done it if I had noticed.

i re used my vent hose too.
was paranoid when removing the connections. the hoses do not have alot of flex maybe 15 degrees but their connecting ends are more durable. I used alot of tweezer style pliers with long handles to reach under the 6 manifold inlets

i didnt change any gaskets. left TB and even manifold to block gaskets

Side note: thank God we have n52 manifolds.
Doing a e46 starter motor replacement fix today on E46 325XI( so only way in is via manifold REMOVE) have the e46 manifold out. Its a total PIA more so than E90 325i/330i crank case oil spearator. Not only do you snap vent hoses, you also have tiny rubber hoses that are brittle with age and snap too. Not to mention fuel rail and like 5 more electronic connections than n52. So I am basically adding the crank case/ oil separator replacement as part of this starter motor fix ( up to ~ $200 more in parts depending how much you replace).
Thinking also of sourcing e46 330i manifold and 330i TB to gain 5hp and up to 10 tq. Might as well, its a total pain.

I'm actually starting to like the 135i simply because it gave us more room to work in our engine bay.

Did it? No turbo 6s for the first 4-5 years of e82 production. Rethink your 135 appreciation!
