BIG 135i headache

A few weeks ago I thought it would be a good idea to install bms h8 angel eyes in my xenon adaptive 135i headlights. Bad idea. Not that the burger ms has a bad product but my ignorance installing it. The cover is a bit trickey to get back into position to close and when I did, it wasnt on all the way and of course I got condensation in my passenger headlight.

It took about 2 weeks for the water to get inside and when I saw the condesation and went to test my lights I got an adaptive headlight error and my low/high beam bulb was out. I bought a bunch of silica gel packets (the packets put in pocketbooks and jackets to absorb moisture) and put my bulbs in a bag with them and taped some to the inside of my headlight cover and put the cover back on. I waited about 2 or 3 days and then reinstalled the bulbs and took out the packets on the inside of the cover with no positive result.

At this point I gave up trying to fix it and went searching for a whole new assembaly. BMW quoted me about 1200 on the new housing minus the bulbs so I looked somewhere else. I always liked the look of the euro lights so I found a decently priced pair of what I thought were xenon adaptive lights and ordered them. About 2 weeks later they came in and after looking at the back I saw the inner bulb was very diffrent looking then the stock h8 on my US spec. I started a thread a few days ago to try and see what the differance was and I was told the guy who I orderd them from lied, because the pair I bought were non-adaptive. Here is my original thread which shows pictues and part #'s ( http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=754538 )

During this time my passenger highlow beam started to flicker, and over the next few days it stayed on and now works. My adaptive system is still not working so I tried to put the vertical aim control peice that was in my euro lights into my original light that suffered the damage and it occasionaly levels when I turn the car on.

At this point I am very frusterated (partley because I ran over a peice of scrap metal on 287 on my way home from work friday which destroyed one of my jack points and splash guards). I would really really appriciate the help guys. Do you guys have any suggestion on how to repair the adaptive system (Maybe a new ballast?),any troulbe shooting tips, or maybe help to tell if my euro lights are adaptive? Any help would be GREAT. Thanks so much guys.

Kyle

Real oem is a good start. But, there are non adaptive and adaptive as well as halogen in Europe.

Sadly it seems like many people who have adaptive issues end up having to replace the whole shebang...which is just grotesquely expensive. Experiences like this make me very wary of ever touching my headlights, the potential cost (several k) is just not worth it. Like was said above, realoem is a good place to start. Are you still under warranty? If so yank the bms h8s and try to have the dealership take action. Sorry to hear about this....

I don't see how the warranty has anything to do with this mess. The problems are self-inflicted, and no amount of warranty is going to help. Nor should it, IMO.

BMW can likely fix it, but not as a warranty item. Cost is owner's.

www.car-part.com to search through wreckers in the US and Canada. Might help, and is a useful bookmark anyway.

update

Headlights are adaptive. I guess the question now is would they throw any codes or even work if I install them? and why is my inner light a h7 instead of an h8 like how it is on my US spec headlights?

Yes I did ask the dealer for a quote on a new assembaly, minus bulbs it is 1200 (yes my warranty has expired)
Thanks!

I agree with you in principle that BMW has no obligation to fix this under warranty, OP voluntarily altered his contract with them...I'm just saying, you may as well see if they can help out in any way. Worst case they say take a hike, and you're back at square one. If OP is willing to pay, there is no doubt BMW can fix it, an adaptive failure isn't particularly exotic. Just expensive

I have not had a warranty contract with BMW for 5 months. I was willing to pay 1100 on euro lights which I'm not even sure work with my car or require coding. I saw 1100 as a better deal buying 2 euro lights, for 200 less then 1 us spec light. I now know they are adaptive but my question now is will these lights work or throw a code if I do install them. Thanks

Make sure you remove all aftermarket lighting prior to going to BMW. Do you still have you'r warranty contract? If not its probably going to be over 1200 and it might be best to get one off ebay, I've seen a few for less then 500$

Indeed, i would not fool with anything electrical on my car as well but what it is it is at this point for you. Being you are in NJ and near 287 there is great little BMW specialty shop called AK Motorwerks in Millstone nj only a few miles from 287..give Alex a call and tell him what's up..I am sure he would help and give you some advice...I take my car there and they are good folks...Tell them Michael sent ya...Good luck.l

I had a similar problem with condensation when i installed my LED angel bulbs. I struggled to put the cover back on and when i finally wrestled it into place. i noticed that i had lost one of my clasps that holds the cover in place( thanks to Brut force and ignorance) . Problem was you cant order the clasp alone from BMW as it comes as part of a new headlight. So long story short i did my best to avoided car washes and rain for over a week till managed to find the clasp on ebay. by then i had condensation, xenon bulb was no longer working in that headlight. it really sucked a lot. I gave it some time and the headlight eventually dried out in my garage with the odd bit of help from a hairdryer. all of a sudden the error message on the dash diapered and my headlight came back to life and its been happy ever after.

Ah they're not that bad unless you're sitting next to a brand new F30 at a stoplight.

Does any body know if this headlight (part number: 6952607) would work inplace with my current headlight (part number: 7164931). I ask because the euro lights are from 2005 and have an h7 bulb in place of my stock headlights that had h8's. Thanks
