Auto-Start/clutch problem

I bought my 120i coupe (2010) last August. I've noticed on a few occasions that after stopping at traffic lights and using the auto start (sometimes without the auto start), I can't get it into first gear. Every now and again it will go into first but as I let the clutch out it will kick the gear stick back into neutral.

I've checked on a few pages but haven't seen this addressed in another thread. Any information/guidance would be appreciated!

(I've had a mechanic friend look at it but we couldn't reproduce the problem.)
