clock doesn't know it's daylight savings time?

my 2004/2007 honda knows whens it's time to set back and forward the clock. (actually, it is off a bit since we have changed the date when we do this in the past few years, but I am only off for a week)

I don't have to do anything, the computer for the clock knows this.

Is there a setting I am missing for my 2008 128i, or do I really have to change the clock myself every fall and spring?

thanks.

yup. because i don't play with the computer often enough, gotta get manual, look it up, figure out the stalk, etc.

it will take 3 minutes, not that it is a big deal, but issue is, why should i do this when the computer already should?

a microwaves cpu has more processing power than the original space shuttle's computer, my bmw has like 15 computers and you are saying that it can't figure out dst?!

when a 16k hyundai / civic etc do this, why doesn't the bimmer. that is what i am not happy about.

end rant, time for reality again. //

This is why the extended service plan is worth the money...clearly. Dealing with stuff like this is just too complicated and time consuming.

The Germans/Europeans do DST. We change our time/clocks/uhr - two weeks before you guys do in Fall and Spring. lol

OP the reason why the Germans don't have a cpu do this for you is bc they ASSUME the driver's of thier cars have some smarts. That is always not the case though - espcially in the American market. It literally takes like 15 secs to scroll thru the BC thumb drive and change the time or date. No biggie.

1. You seem to be a bit late making the time change.

2. What is a 128ci? I have a 128i. I don't think BMW has used a "c" designation since the E46.

3. On your turn signal stalk, there is a small lever a few inches from the end. It will allow you to scroll through (and often adjust) all sorts of interesting info on the OBC - including resetting the time and date with no need to involve iDrive.

4. Reading the manual in front might also be helpful in understanding how to interact with your car.

5. It's not just a German thing. My wife's Ford must be reset manually, just like every car and motorcycle I've ever owned.

Actually, I'm more surprised that some cars DO change the time automatically. Seriously... how often have time zones changed over the last decade requiring software updates to computer systems? I can count at least twice... that's twice more than most cars have been in for a computer update

Jeez guys, lighten up on the guy.
He's simply making an observation as to why the system doesn't do it on it's own, not that he can't figure out how to do it.

Heck we've got "one touch" window switches as it seems we can't be bothered with holding a button for a few seconds. A freaking $500 option so that we can't be bothered with inserting a key or fob into a slot. CPU power is used for these conveniences. It's not that outrageous to wonder why the car can't make the adjustment on it's own.

I never thought about this really until this thread, and adjusting the time twice a year is not a big deal to me. Given all the silly things we all could easily do but have a computer do it for us, it's not that crazy to wonder why the time doesn't adjust on it's own.

Oh, and Dackelone, nice dig there on us US citizens.
OP the reason why the Germans don't have a cpu do this for you is bc they ASSUME the driver's of thier cars have some smarts. That is always not the case though - espcially in the American market.

I don't see a smiley. Should we ASSUME you meant to have one there?

I've had 2 software updates on my 135i in a little over 2yrs.
Modern car computers get updates much more often than changes to the daylight saving time schedule.

The bit about some cars actually doing this automatically (presumably without access to an Internet time server) is a new one on me as well. The procedure is pretty complex, with the exact time of the change varying by time zone and the date of the change varying by country/state, and often changing from year to year. On the other hand, the actual amount of data required to store in the clock to accomplish this would be pretty small, and these days cars get electronic updates just about every trip to the dealer, so maybe that's pretty easy to manage.

I had been under the general impression that the manufacturers were waiting for full-time Internet connectivity to deal with this issue. (GM showed off the upcoming XTS today, which is (more or less) always on the Internet.) But I guess Honda and Hyundai went another route.

The thing I've never been clear on is why they can't just pull a time code from satellite radio. (But maybe Sirius/XM doesn't do anything like that.)

That raises another interesting question. Does the OP's 2004/07 Honda (is this one car?) automatically change the time when moving from one time zone to another? Does it allow for the Newfoundland time zone with it's 1/2 hour variance from Atlantic time?
