Auto transmission not shifting when using shifter

Transmission in DS mode. Paddles work fine. However, when usng the shifter it will only downshift and not upshift.

Question is then: Is there a microswitch or how does the system actually work within the shifter itself.

I did some searching but no hits.

While I am not quite sure if there are microswitches, you might be able to find your ansewr on getbmwparts.com. They have a lot of diagrams of parts.

pop the shifter cover off and make sure the connections are good. it's common for them to lose connection or for the harnesses to rub down and break.

Yup. Just put your fingers underneath the side facing the rear of the car and pull up. It just pops out with pressure clips. You'll have a little slack with the two cables connected to it- make sure the cables are plugged in securely and check for any wear on the two harnesses.

Just to be clear. I assume you mean the pice of plastic that has the material attached to it.

Or do you mean the bezel that has the PRND on it.

the bezel that has the fabric-like material, correct. just put your fingers under the side facing the rear of the car and pull up gently. it's just held in with some pressure clips and pops up.

Well, since the shifting mechanism works with the paddles, and you've checked all the connectors and harnesses underneath the shift lever, I think that pretty much leaves the gear selector box itself.

From what I can tell on the parts diagrams, it looks like it is a replaceable unit, rather than an assembly that can be broken down...

Part # 61319213647 - roughly $370.

I solved this problem by getting a manual transmission. Now it shifts every time I shift it, without fail.
