My understanding is that the BMW Nav systems use accelerometers, the steering system and ABS to work in the 'out of signal' areas - I'm sure I read this on the BMW site somewhere. It's cool watching it work in an underground car park.

Think about it, without line of sight of the sky, it can't be using the GPS satellites, so, it has to be another method. It knows where it was when it lost signal, how far it's gone and in what direction(s). Easy peezy.
