FYI

Just checked the tracking website again and my car has been loaded onto the DON QUIJOTE scheduled to arrive in melbourne on 24 March 2009. I'm assuming all those other Jan production cars will also be on this boat.

Get really adventurous and go map the journey through the different port on Google Maps. Heck, these cars go on a pretty nice cruise around the world before they get into your hands! If only they could take pictures...

LOL... that is a good map.

I email my dealer lady this morning and I have a VIN number. She told me there is no record for the melbourne ETA yet. She said she is tracking it daily.

I also went to the cargo site suggested above. No luck.

taka - have you tried calling bmw head office. they seem to have more info than the dealers... it seems that the dealers are last to know about anything. My dealer was surprised to learn i could actually track the shipment of my car!

yes, the seem to operate independently... Even though my sales guy was able to give me my VIN, he apparently couldn't access other information from his system such as the production week and shipping details. Apparently he gets an email from BMW Australia on this stuff. Even as of last week, he wasn't able to confirm whether my car had actually been built, whereas BMW Australia could.

You are given a VIN only after the car has been built. But the car then sits in the shipping yard till it gets loaded on the ship. That's when it shows up on the shipping site. Some times they don't show up on the shipping site until a few days after your ship has sailed. So don't worry too much guys!

I have been advised that my car was built 4th week of Feb. and is waiting for a ship to be allocated (roulette). Promised March, extended to April, but possibly May delivery.

thanks guys, very keen to get my hands on the car given what high praises everyone has said about it. If my initial 2 hr test drive was any indication, then I'm going to be a very happy customer.

Billybob - just as a guide, my car was built 1st week of Jan and is expected to dock end of March, so delivery wont be around till mid April... I guess it probably depends on the shipping dates and how long your car will sit there waiting for the boat.

Hi all,

It was great reading through this thread and reminiscing on my near-6 month wait (long story on another posting). All I can say to you folks is that it is absolutely worth the wait, and the fun doesn't end after the car arrives.

The web tracking by W&W, evidently unknown to some dealers, is fun to follow. Keep in mind it appears to be in European timezone so don't get too upset when it looks like your car is stuck in Fremantle after it finally touches Australia.

Expect also to find yourself following news stories of sea pirates and sinkings very closely during this time.

Mine is a few days over 1 month new now. 1,000km kilometres later, I still find excuses to go run 'errands', even on behalf of strangers.

Thanks Fatboy for the guidance. My dealer is pretty mute. Mind you I have asked whether they could add the rumoured LSD and BMW Performance upgrade since it wipped around various forums. Response was NO LSD, and NO such kit available at this stage for the Australian market.

I have since collared an LSD.

I am starting to get mildly excited, as I have been bored by BMW incompetence to date.
