Anyone else have an issue with the hood switch not engaging when closing the hood? It's like half inch too low.

Price quote from the dealer

Hi all, I was told by many dealers in Toronto that the installation and programming would be 4 hours of labour on top of the cost of the alarm kit.

That is freakin' ridiculous. Anyone else get a cheaper quote?

Thanks

Install it yourself, ask for coding only. It's literally plugging in a hood switch (to existing cabling) and plugging in and mounting (with provided hardware) the siren piece in the left rear wheel-well. Probably one of the easiest mods ever.

Anyone run into this?

I might just electrical tape the hood switch closed permanently....so at least the alarm will go off if anyone breaks in.

This is an awesome thread, props to ChrisK for such an excellent write-up. My '11 135i has no alarm, but I was beyond certain the wiring was all there and all that was missing was the electronics and siren. I mean, why would BMW vary that with such a low-volume production car? Less expensive (for BMW) to build them all the same and vary options with easy plug-in electronics at the end of the line. Right? WRONG-O, no wiring (easy to see by the missing connector under the hood). DAMN IT. Fritz....

Just wandered back into this thread, and meanwhile have my '11 Sept build E82 some years. Although it is absolutely a full fledged crash-course into the full E82 interior wiring, it can certainly be done. For DIY: Retrofit Factory Alarm Option 302 (for non pre-wired cars)

Poking around under my hood find this connector at the right side, just below the windshield (picture borrowed from another thread in this forum). What is this? Doesn't appear to go anywhere or do anything? Hoping it's part of some alarm hook-up, but I'm doubting that....

Agh, never mind. At least I have one good eye that can read the tiny part number on the thing. 6411 6988303-03,240559-10, air quality monitoring sensor. Betting this is for the air circulate function of the climate control (where it will shut outside air supply if quality is "bad").

fortunately you have burst your own bubble already in a 2nd post. Here's some equally bad news; the factory alarm pre-wire is <=2009 and would be found on the left side of the car (similar position though).

Does anyone know what it is that actually makes the beep sound and clown nose blink? Would the module itself be sufficient for that or does the chirp come from the siren? I have a 12/08 build... but I really am only interested in those 2 things.

Dackelone

Any ideas?

You need to buy the whole kit. There is a siren that is mounted in the left rear of the body above the wheel and the clown nose is activated when it's connected to the alarm brain which is mounted in the centre module containing your dome light. You need both of these. Coding is required to activate the chirp.

I spent $300 CAD to get the kit from the dealer, and an hour total to install and code it myself. Totally worth it IMO.

I just noticed something very interesting on a few sites. There is a version of the alarm retrofit kit for convertibles that does not include the interior motion protection. Can this be installed on the Coupe? It is $110 cheaper. Will it still have the chirp and clown blink?

See response from the convertible alarm thread: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=662125

Edit: When I ordered from the dealer in September 2014, they started quoting me individual parts. The siren was like $260 CAD or something by itself, ultrasonic sensor was over 100, but the whole kit was $330 CAD including everything in the breakdown below. This was my experience, your dealer could very well give you different info. The convertible kit will not work on the coupe though because the siren bracket is different. Only the hood switch + bracket and siren will transfer over. You would need to pick and choose the parts you want via the part numbers below.

See below, taken from the official BMW Coupe Alarm install instructions:

Reviving an old thread. I installed an alarm on my previous BMW and just purchased a 2012 135. Does anyone know if all cares were pre-wired for an alarm? An older BMW had a little circle plaque in the trunk that noted that.

I searched the VIN build sheet, but did not see any code that indicated there was a pre-wire.

Thanks

I think it was sometime in 2010 or 2011. (Not 100% sure) BMW stopped pre-wiring all cars for the Alarm. If your before that specific date then you can retrofit the alarm to the pre-wired car.

@Yeineken Thanks. The car is a 2012, so it probably is not wired. It is such and easy install when pre-wired!
