BMW SSK for 1M same as that of 135i?

Does any body have any idea?

According to realoem.com the 1M/135 part #s for the 6-sp shifter are exactly the same. So I assume that the various kits (BMW Peft SSK, ActiveAutowerke, etc) that are made for the 135i should also work on the 1M too?

According to our resources its the same as the N55 transmission, so none of the N54 SSK's work. We haven't tried yet tho...

The 1M uses the SAME 6MT trans as the N55 does. It has been reported in teh past that BMW says the Performance SSK does not fit N55's (and hence the 1M). The reason is bc the N55's use a different shift "arm" or "carrier" than the N54's use.

#1 in the bellow diagram is what I am referring too. This is the "arm" or "carrier".

#8 is the shift lever arm. This part is also changed in the Perf SSK. I would "think" that you could replace the 1M part with the Perf SSK and have 85% of the short feel of the SSK. But I have never seen anyone post about doing such a mod. I would use this shift arm from the Perf SSK: bmw # 25110434217

Bellow is my (stock) "arm" or "carrier" from my N54 after I had the Perf SSK installed. This part is indeed stamped with a N54 logo.

You should ALWAYS replace this ball or plastic bushing/bearing when working on the shifter. I would also order some extra C-clips bc you will loose one... and its a PIA to find one at the dealer when your car is up in the air. Btw... most shops only charge 1 hours labor for the install. That is what my BMW Zentrum charged me. Plus they had to drop the mid pipes to have more room to put those damm c-clips back on.

Also... FYI... here are the shifter throws...

N54 = 80 mm throws (1st to 2nd)
N55 = 70 mm throws
N54 w/Perf SSK 55 mm throws.

Many ppl have said that the Perf SSK is one heck of a great mod. I have to agree. It is a MUST HAVE mod on any 6MT BMW, along with the "CDV delete" mod.

Nice, a 25mm reduction. I may have to look into the SSK. Doesn't the SSK also come with the BMW Performance shift knob and boot as well? I don't particularly want those items, but I suppose I could install the linkage and sell knob and boot.

Actually you can order the Perfoamnce SSK as a one box kit of you can order each part individually. And its cheaper when you order each part individually! I did not order nor want the kit's shift knob or the shifter bag. I only wanted the shorter shift feel. It is a great mod!

Here are a few good resources for how BMW shifters work:

http://www.mz3.net/articles/143.html

http://www.understeer.com/onlinestore-shifters.shtml

25mm might not sound like much but its HUGE when you go to shift. It really helps makes teh car feel so much more sportier.

Slightly off topic but anyone know why they went with the N55's transmission for the 1M over the existing N54 transmission? Just curious.

Why? The 6MT shift pattern is the same for LHD vs RHD cars.

I wonder why? Maybe try asking a local dealer to you? Surely someone has installed a SSK on a RHD 135i. ?

I took a quick look on RealOEM.com when you select a N54 eurpo version of the 15i and also select RHD it shows the SSK being available...

I looked around www.RealOEM.com again. Maybe I am missing something but I don't understand why BMW's Performance SSK would not work on a RHD car. The shift pattern is the same as are all the OE parts. Here is a quick comparison of 135i (N54)euro LHD vs RHD models...

LHD stock shifter parts

25117524720 carrier
25117581806 shift lever

RHD stock shifter parts

25117524720 carrier
25117581806 shift lever

As you can see the shifting parts are the same for RHD and LHD models. Maybe the shift bag is different? I really don't know why the Performance SSK would not work. ?

LHD Performance SSK parts

25110434218 carrier
25110434217 shift lever

You will also need a new plastic bearing for the shift lever and some extra c-clips incase any of them break or go missing during the R&R.

25111220600 bearing
25117571899 c-clip

Hello,
I have a BMW 1M and I am very surprised that during the service it turned out that I have installed "arm" or "carrier" from N54 (with the N54 logo, number 25117524720).
The previous owner had to install it, but for what purpose?
any ideas?
I wonder if I should replace it with the N55, it would be like from a factory.
