Speaker buzz/crackling... Burning smell
Hi guys, I posted this at bimmerfest too, hoping that I could get some more help/info on this...
Okay... so I'm driving yesterday in the crappy rain we've had here in Southern California. The speakers start popping and crackling. Then I smell something like burning plastic. Changing the radio station results in a noticeably long delay. Audio seemed tinny as well. At first I thought it was just a blown speaker (why, I have no idea as I don't play the music very loud), so I turned it off. The crackling was still there; it seemed like it was coming from the left driver speaker, bluetooth mic area, and rear passenger side speakers. It buzzed once at a very loud volume. The burning smell was pretty nasty and gave me a terrible headache. I took it straight to the dealer. I'm still waiting for a call back from my SA. Anyone else notice this? Maybe something due to the rain? I got a Mustang (non-GT) convertible as a loaner and am pretty happy that the sun just came out.

i don't know what could have happened. But you mentioned bad burning smell and a buzz sound. I wonder if the car has a smoke detection system hence the buzz sound you heard. Keep us posted, very interesting occurances for sure.

I'm gonna take a completely WAG on this and say the rain might have shorted out one of the amps that's connected to the speaker in the door and it's heating up and melting plastic inside the door. Just a guess though.
