Hey Guys

What do you think of the new 3L single turbo engine that BMW is Putting in the new 35 Models?

It will be known as "BMW TwinPower" as it will now have a single turbocharger with twin scroll technology. It will how ever have a the same Kw and Torque then the N44 but the Max Torque will come in at 1200rpm.

was about to make a similar post. I wonder if it really will perform the same, especially up here in joburg.

Surely the twin turbo will still be the king to chip/mod etc?

Some cool things is that it uses less petrol and if it really is just as fast, it will fly because its lighter. So cornering will be a lot better and then surely it will beat the twin turbo? not by much but surely it will be noticed?

Its more responsive but torque comes in later than the N54, but the torque doesnt drop close to the redline. I think id have to drive one to see if i can see the difference though.

Torque on the N55 actually comes in earlier and lasts longer when configured in 225kW 400Nm mode. The later torque is when configured in 245kW (430? Nm) setup; only reason the torque peaks later is that the engine management limits the peak at 430Nm; it'll reach 400Nm at the same revs, irrespective of config.

Personally I think that 99% of the improvements in this engine are down to integration of valvetronic. This is what is letting it breath better at the lowest and highest revs, spreading the torque and improving economy.

The choice to go from twin turbo to single twin-scroll turbo seems like nothing more than the good sense of achieving the exact some outcome at a much lower cost and greater simplicity. Well, at least from a manufacturing perspective; from engine management it is probably more complex, but software is easy to change, hardware isn't. Turbochargers are devilishly expensive items and using a single twin-scroll should have a significant impact on cutting the cost of manufacturing the engine.

In terms of driving, I would be extremely surprised if it is possible to notice the difference between the two. Their performance characteristics are virtually identical and the N54 revs quite high already.

Valvetronic's most notable influence (performance-wise) on the previous generation (non-turbo) engines was that the engines reved higher and more freely. And even then the benefits were small by comparison to a change from aluminium to magnesium for the cylinders. I had two 140kW E39 525i (pre-valvetronic) and a 160kW 325i (with valvetronic). The 160kW motor was much nicer, particularly at the top end. But the N54 already revs high, even without valvetronic... The turbo engines are unlikely to use magnesium construction any time soon as they're subjected to greater pressure.

I'm not convinced about the weight argument. 4kg just isn't noticeable on a 1560kg car. You'd get significantly more benefit simply by being judicious about your options list or driving with 10% less fuel in the tank...

As for tuning, I think it's also much of a muchness, however, the N54 is a slightly less complicated engine from a management perspective and most tuning involves changing the engine management...

I'm assuming they are now available here? BMW SA's website still show the "Muscle power.
The Twin Turbo straight 6-cylinder petrol engine."...
I'm guessing they must be (or obvious old stock on the floor)?

Anyone got the new N55 135?

Hi gmza,

What do you mean by the two engine configurations?

Doesn't the N55 make the same power in ALL Bmw's? ???

Which models get which engine configuration>?

David

The N54 is currently offered in a few states of tune:
225kW@5800, 400Nm@1300-5000 (135i, 335i, etc.)
240kW@5800, 430Nm@1500-4500 (740i)
250kW@5800, 450Nm@? with 500Nm overboost function (Z4 sDrive 35is)

INITIALLY the N55 will be offered in only one state of tune:
225kW@5800-6400, 400Nm@1200-5000 (launched in 5GT, now in 135i)

The N55 will, during the course of model year 2011, replace the N54 in *EVERY* application where the N54 is configured for 225kW. This is all the *35i models. The N54 will continue to be used in higher-output applications (e.g. 740i and Z4 sDrive 35is).

I had originally seen a power/torque graph of the N55 suggesting 430NM configuration (on mwerks.com as far as I can recall). This appears to have been misreported and subsequently removed. It must have been the graph for the N54 in 240kW tune.

It is, however, being widely suggested that a higher-tune version of the N55 will ultimately replace the higher-tune versions of the N54, however, this hasn't been announced yet. As with most BMW motors (look the the N52 in *25i and *30i config and N54), higher-output versions typically only follow a few years after the engine has been in the market in a conservative state of tune (long enough to assess reliability).

Below is a comparison of the N54 (in 225kW tune) and N55 (225kW).

Hi gmza

Thanks for a great post! just so everyone knows...

1 kW = 1.36 PS (din Hp)
225kW = 306 PS = 300 SAE Hp.

Looking at BMW's various engine tunes... makes me YEARN for a 250kW@5800, 450Nm@? with 500Nm overboost function of the Z4 sDrive 35is!!! I guess the PPK is somewhere between this engine and the 240kW ?

I know Bmw says the 6MT can not take the extra Nm's but dam that would be sweet in the light(er) 135i package.

bye
David
