Why not just spray it with Plasti-Dip? Cost $8 a can and leaves a nice matte finish. It's very durable, and if you tire if the look, you can just peel it off to reveal the chrome underneath unscathed. I did mine when I first got the car, then decided to change the look and peeled off the coating just on the vertical slats.
