Fuel door won't open??

I was washing the car last week and closed the fuel door by accident w/out the rubber insert. Not sure if that has anything to do with why it won't open... but now it's basically stuck. No idea what to do and gas I'm gonna need to fill up soon. Anybody experience this before?

There might be an emergency release cable behind the trunk trim panel. On older BMW models it looked like a green plastic string.

Bingo!

According to the 1 series owner's manual, p.106:

1. "remove the cover from the right hand side wall of the cargo bay"
2. "pull the button with the fuel pump symbol down"
The fuel filler door will then be released.
