Over Heating transmission not the transmission, instead non-insulated heating duct
I was driving from the local touch-less car wash this evening, 20-degrees C outside, and upon arriving at home I had noticed that there was a SIGNIFICANT amount of heat on my right knee!
There was no enthusiastic driving or full throttle play or anything that would warrant the engine being pushed. Just a cruise over about 2km from the car wash to home. I reached down to touch the trim in the foot-well where the carpet piece reaches the plastic bits and notice that all the material was REALLY REALLY hot. Looking at the instrument cluster the temperature gauge on the motor was reading just below 120 F, with no signs of coming down. Note: this is the first time I have ever seen the vehicle's temperature that high, usually the car hovers around 70 - 80 F even when pushed. Is anyone else feeling the same thing? Have the temperatures in your cars come up this high? The only time I have felt this hot temperature is in my pick up truck when hauling a HUGE load and the transmission is really over-worked. Could the same be happening here? ?? Comments? UPDATE: May 24 2011: spoke with the Service Advisor this afternoon about the droning exhaust as well as the extreme heat I was feeling in the driver's footwell. Results: The Service advisor indicated that there is a duct tunnel running in parallel with the center gear selector console which uncomfortably transfers heat to the driver in some cases. That said, they have come across the problem before and the dealer has heat wrapped the duct (the entire length of the driver's seat) so that the heat transmission is kept to a minimal. opinion This is a really large oversight for BMW... The car is really high in quality, and for something so silly I would have expected a little better. Good thing there are well minded mechanics and service people at BMW willing to come up with practical solutions. Last edited by rapter; 05-24-2011 at 04:42 PM.. |

Don t know if it s the same as the 3 series, if there is an air mix control for the rear seats, put it to the cold position.

Just to be clear, the heat was at my right leg while driving (ei. The engine or transmission) expelling a lot of heat. A LOT. |

there is an engine temp gauge? thought it was just oil temp like the 135i/335i. 120 F isn't that hot....ambient air outside back home is that hot in the summer.

you sure you didn't have the heater on? or maybe just air system set to neutral so it would be venting....hot air can get pulled from the engine bay or it could be that the heater core is right where you are describing.
