Glad everythings ok. Its pretty amazing that your body didnt jolt forward into the airbag and dont worry about the car. It can be replaced.

I did have the adaptive xenons... apparently didn't help much... better tires (non runflats) may have helped though... idk.

I do somewhat hope it's totalled, but I wouldn't be getting a new car soon --my sister's in ecuador for 3 months, so I've got her Jetta for now. I'll get another E90 a little later. If it's not totalled, then I get my car back a little sooner --I just can't justify getting another car right now with a car available to me... before I just had to get a car cuz my old car died.

I don't know what's going on with the insurance still and I don't know if I can buy it back and part it out --it's about 120 mi from my house right now so it's kind of difficult to do parting. But some people have already pm'd me about getting parts. I don't know if I'm going to do that, but when the time comes, I'll let you all know.

I slid sideways... so nope. No traction control adjusting. I've felt it kick in in other situations though... hard corners and other slippery surfaces in a straight line. So be careful everyone, that DSC and DTC don't make your car slip-proof!

Correct, if it's not totalled --if it is, the insurance will settle with the bank, and give me the value of the car minus whatever they used to settle with the bank. Insurance will go up because they already determined I'm at fault. There were no other cars, only the road and myself to blame. I'm not sure if I have to pay a deductable if it's totalled though.

Sorry to say, but you really wouldn't want that car to be fixed.

Hopefully you can get a check for what your E90 was worth(probably alot of $$$$$).
Either get another E90 or try something new.

Honestly, I am surprised you slid so easily(from your story, thats what it sounds like).
I thought E90 would have better control than that. Lost complete
control of the vehicle @ 35mph when its raining. Hmmm.
Doesn't sound any better than a ford focus. I know DSC/DTC
is not a bullet proof system, but come on.

Was it a really narrow turn? Almost a U-turn shaped curve?
and what was the speed limit in that road?

I would like to add a few things here:

No matter what car, no matter what brand of tyres, when it's raining nothing can save you. There is a high chance that in the rain, just as you turned your wheel to take the corner there was a "build-up" of water..the tyres leave the road and the car start slipping. All the suspension and traction control in the world can't help...not even ABS braking.

When driving in normal conditions, you only have about an A4 page of tyre holding you to the road. When it starts to rain, the tyres do their best to "disperse" the water, but essentially you lose ALOT more grip. With wet slippery leaves (that the tyre cannot disperse) there is even less grip. In this very sad case, there was not enough grip to hold the car on the road. The situation is even worse if it's the first hard rain of the season, or hard rain in a while as their is grease and dirt all over the roads.

Since I went on both BMW Advanced Driver Training, and another more technical advanced driver training course - I am petrified to drive in the rain. I reduce my speed drastically. In the clear, that 35mph corner could have easily been taken at 45mph or even 50mph. In the rain, you should take corners below their recommended speed - at say 20mph or even slower.

Near my house we have a nice long curve - In the clear I can take it at 110km/h + with my E90. When it rains, if I take it at 60km/h I feel the car slipping, so I usually slow right down to about 40-50km/h.

Another thing: If anyone has seen accident tests being conducted...most of them are only conducted at 30km/h. This is because above 30km/h - accident forces are so unpredictable, they wouldn't be able to compare tests to determine how safe a car is.

I think in this case the car did it's job very well. It collapsed, and protected you - the driver. If that LA times article is correct, the car should most definately be totaled!! Glad you are ok!

And remeber, if it's raining - drive like an old granny...

I THINK it is totaled so you should be able to get a brand new ride. (i am not an ajuster either).

Sorry to hear about that, that totally sucks!!

Gap insurance is a must-have if you are financing a brand new car. Basically, "gap" insurance covers the gap between the actual value of your car at the time of the accident and the amount you still owe the finance company.

Let's say you paid about $40k for your brand new E90 and financed the total amount. If your car is totalled (which in this case it is) and you don't have gap insurance, your insurance company will only pay you the actual value of the car at the time of the accident (it will have depreciated by then), while you still owe the lender the full amount (the $40k) you financed. If you have gap insurance, it will cover the difference.

Gap insurance is really cheap too, it is only costing me $8 for six months.
