Brake light missing

Anyone know of a problem with the brake light cover on the Vert boot (the long thin one above the BMW badge)?

I noticed a crack in it a few weeks ago (top to bottom, in the middle) and came out ot my car this morning and the whole fitting had come off.

At first I thought crooks may have pried it off in attempt to get to the lock mechanism, but there is no sign of damage.

Guess Il have to tape it off to stop rain getting in until I can get it replaced.

This is a known problem. BMW were overtightening the bits that hold the light cover on. See the dealer. There is a thread that covers this in deatail elsewhere.

Mine was cracked in several places. I got it replaced preemptively.

question for those that have had a cracked light - do you close your boot (trunk) with your hand on top of the bootlid and put pressure on it?
Having seen this one in the forum I make sure that I close it without putting any force on the bootlid - i.e. pull it down from inside, or push it closed under the number plate. will this make a difference?
(3 months so far with daily opening & closing and no probs ... touch wood)

There is a BMW Service bulletin out on this. The problem has to do with a missing rubber bushing, and overtightening of the mounting bolts.

When my car get delivered, the dealer warned me twice that do not close the boot by closing it on top of the bootlid, I didn't understand why at the time but now the reason is seems quite clear...

Thought the problem was limted to the coupe only..Saying that I have always kept an eye on this tail light for even the smallest of cracks to be sure..
So far no problem....touch wood..

No I think it is a vert problem...

It is under warranty anyway so it does not matter.

Even the one vert in the BMW dealer has one missing. I had to point out to the sales lady... ^^

Cracked Third Brake Light

MODEL
E82, E88 (1 Series) produced up to July 29, 2008

SITUATION
The mounting tension on the third brake light lens is causing the lens to crack from the body. When installing or replacing the third brake light, P/N 63 25 7 164 978, additional spacers must be added to the mounting studs to reduce the mounting tension.

CAUSE
Excess mounting tension caused by the four compression springs

PROCEDURE
In the case of a customer complaint:

Remove the defective high-mounted brake light in accordance with Repair Instruction 63 25 000 (Removing and installing/replacing auxiliary brake light).

2. For the E88 only, grind the metal tab as shown.

3. For the E88 only, grind the right opening. Remove approx. A = 0.5 mm of material as shown.

4. Protect the areas which were ground to prevent corrosion (e.g., by applying epoxy/self-etching primer and using a paint stick).

5. Check the areas for paint damage where the brake light rests against the trunk lid, and repair any areas where damage is found in order to prevent future corrosion.

6. Before installation of the lamp, assemble an M5 nut onto each of the four dome-headed studs to act as a spacer and reduce the spring tension.

7. Insert the new brake light into the trunk lid, and center it in the lamp cutout.

8. Reinstall the four compression springs and then the four combined hexagon nuts and washers, tightening first the inner two studs, followed by the outer two studs. Tighten to the specified torque of 2.5 Nm.
