Broke my 3rd brake light while washing car...

So yeah, I was buffing the wax off the car, when my microfiber cloth got caught behind the corner of the 3rd brakelight and snap, broke it right off. Has this happened to anyone else? Getbmwparts is saying $80 for a new one. How do i even replace it??? Thoughts

There's a DIY in the DIY section, it's really straight forward. Pull the trunk liner, remove bolts and wiring harness. Install in reverse order.

You may need to modify your new light to match the original brake light if there is a notch missing from the white plastic

If you're under CPO, I'm sure they'll change it. Just don't mention how it happened.

Pretty simple to do. Basic tools. Just dont tighten too much when installing or you will break light, snug til its seeded.

+1. Chances are it would have popped off eventually if it was loose enough to fall off in the way you described. Go in and mention the TSB.

Not true from my experience. I had to replace myself. Was easy to do. 15 min.

So update, took my car in for oil change and mentioned the lens. They DECLINED covering it for me under CPO or any goodwill. They proceeded to try to charge me $310 to replace the lens. I declined, will replace at home, k thanks.

Surprising. Dealership replaced mine free of charge when I bought it (used) because they were worried that it would break.

Mine was replaced by the dealership free of charge 3 days ago. Try another dealer.

Dealer SHOULD replace, but it is an easy part to replace anyway.

JUST REMEMBER TO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN THE BOLTS IN THE BACK. This is why they seem to fracture more easily.

This happened on my 2008 135i today. Damnit.

Part: 63-25-7-164-978 High Mount Lamp

Is there an aftermarket option that does disco beats or should I just drop $80 on OEM?

Happened to my 2010 as well. The replacement is easy to do, few spring loaded fasteners on the back side of the trunk, HOWEVER, in a typical BMW fashion, there has been a design change at some point. The new replacement OEM brake-light does not have the "notch" that was present in earlier versions. This means, you either need to cut a notch into your shiny new brakelight OR file away the notch from the sheet metal of your E82 trunk .

Sorry, I'm just laughing because I had to go though this at one point as well.

Here is Dackelone 's DIY:

Thanks. I'm ordering the $40 dorman from amazon today.

DORMAN 923-231 Third Brake Lamp Assembly

ETA: The Dorman product has two minor issues.
1) The need to trim plastic and/or metal tab as described in this thread.
2) The overall width longwise is just about 1/8" too short on both ends. This leaves a very small slit for water intrusion on both ends. The product is not 100% fitted for the opening.

Pros: Looks stock. Functional.
