I'm thinking most carjackings happen in carparks/on the streets late at night when you just get into your car. No time for the autolock feature to work.

The dealer at Trivett wanted $4000 for the the factory alarm to be retro-fitted! I just walked away and went with Ryda, paid $400 total at the time (1 year ago).
Has all the usual functions, works with the oem remote, remote window opening/closing (not sure if this featrure is standard), panic button, confirmation beeps etc.

Never had a problem, no glitchs, just works.
Did they have to pull much of the interior apart to install this alarm? I'm just worried that i may possibly end up with a creaky cabin after the install...

If you look at the e90post forum, under either the Maintenance or Electronics sub forum (not sure which) there is a DIY for retrofitting the alarm. Did not look too hard.

You would need to visit a dealer for re-programming, but otherwise it looked pretty easy and these cars cannot be that much different to pull apart.

Do you guys think an alarm will deter the smash and enter?

Maybe not the smash and enter, probally will deter the screw driver in lock, hot wiring attempt, car getting towed away type scenarios.
Just an extra feature, may also save on insurance premiums.

They removed the panels under the steering column and the A piller panels (near the front windows, either side). They will mount the the siren in the engine bay area.
This is totally different to how the oem alarm is installed.

I have creaks that developed over a year, I just took it back to BMW to have it sorted. Most of the creaks and noise in this car they acknoweleged to be a problem and so they fix without fuss. BTW they put felt in between panels to stop the creaking. Not sure what else they do.

ok no probs, i've actually already also booked my car in for the installation next week... they also have to run a cable to the boot i'm not sure what they have to strip to do that?

Nice to know that BMW will sort out the creaks though!
