It just disables various traction nannies. So no. Except if you lose the back end, then it's most certainly bad

Taking off all the traction control options is like driving the way it used to be.....
I've driven and owned manual trans vehicles since 1975 and don't plan on going auto any time soon. YMMV |

^^ obviuosly you have never hit some sand or dust coming around corner on normal road only to find yourself suddenly facing the wrong direction. No amount of driver ability can compensate for those unexpected situations.
The incredible ability of traction control is clearly shown to you when you either attend driving school or pick up your car in Spartanburg. The demonstration while I was driving made an absolute believer out of me. I will never drive on the road with it disabled. |

The DCT is an amazing transmission, we chose it for the E88. For the 135is, which will see some track time and more spirited driving when the Mrs. isn't along, I still prefer to shift for myself.
I took my drivers license test in a 1980 Mustang 2.3l 4 spd, and with the exception of a 2007 E90 335ia in the garage for 30 months, it's been MT ever since Is it faster? no More efficient? nope Miserable in rush hour traffic? oh yeah More fun and involved? you bet |

I think your last point is pushing me towards an MT... the wife cant (wont) drive a MT unless she had no other choice, but I think I would end up enjoying the car significantly more.

Interesting. I wonder if the auto in the 1 is the same as the auto in the 335d? The 335d is auto only, because the manual was not able to hold the torque. 425 lbs-ft.

It's far cheaper to teach her to drive manual (or maybe convince her to drive manual) than it would be to trade/sell the DCT7 for a MT6 replacement |

I do not believe so…but not positive. 335D is 425 tqs at the crank, right? My car is more like 425 tqs at the wheels. But regardless, all of these trannys have headroom built in, and I haven’t seen too many people nuke theirs at upwards of 500wtq. So we’ll see. Avoiding hard launches and tuning for modest post-shift stress will def. help a lot.

This thread needs some specificity. The Steptronic automatic transmission from BMW pretty much neuters the driving experience. The DCT transmission is darn fantastic though. My only complaint so far is throttle response when you just want to accelerate calmly from a stop. I get nothing nothing nothing then zoom! Sport mode helps a bit and I may get better at manipulating the throttle over time, so I don't want to complain too loudly yet.
For me, there's no doubt about it, manual transmissions are more fun to drive, but for commuting, normal ho-hum city driving and even on the track, I'd rather have the DCT and don't regret going that route so far. If I were just buying a fun car that I didn't have to drive in traffic very often, I'd probably go manual. |

^^^This, I have the DCT and love it in LA. The shifts sound amazing and the launch control is fun. That being said nothing compares to the experience a manual gear box offers. I was hell bent on finding a 6MT... until I drove the DCT. If your in the market for one of these cars and want to lose some sleep test drive both

Mine is an auto, love it because I commute with it to work. I have another car that's a manual so that's alright. I never have TC off unless I want to launch for whatever reason. There is no point, I don't need to light up my tires every time I drive.

Like others, I had always been MT in every car I ever owned until this purchase. My worries with the AT were from a dead stop and off the line..
As it’s a daily drive, I push it occasionally and find nothing but respect for the gearbox and like how it locks up when you need it to. I have also never had a problem finding needed torque in situations where I needed it, via pedal play or switching to manual.. Still surprised at how it reacts actually… Solid transmission so far… |

I love the DCT semi-auto... but I have to admit, there's a feel to a stick that's just more -- organic, maybe? And then there's the cost difference. But man... I ain't complainin'.

No doubt the auto in these cars is a great transmission, but a bit too soft for my liking.. I chose the DCT simply because I fell in love with my mothers 2011 E82 DCT. I'd love a manual but this is my daily commuter, so it's much more comfortable for me. I still have my E36 M if I want to go out and row through the gears.. nothing beats a real gearbox and a throttle cable
