To an enthusiast, a 1M will stand out. To an average Joe, the iconic 911 is more recognizable.

Either way I don't see how a 1M or 911 for that matter would be 'disappointing' as mentioned.

As far as "standing out"... more people have approached me and asked questions about the oner until now, than have in the entire three years I was driving the (red!) M3. With the M3, there were a number of people that approached me with environmentalist bs, asking why one would want to drive such a car today. None of that with the bulldog. People that come and ask, know what it is and they all smile, happy to have seen one live. A standard 911 is nothing special around here.

The dream of the average Joe who likes cars in America is to buy a Porsche when he hits retirement. Credit to the Steve Mcqueens film. Last edited by GoingTooFast; 10-18-2011 at 04:08 AM.. |

This is the most accurate statement in this thread. After daily driving my car for a few months I have noticed in general in blends in. The average Joe will think the 1M is just another BMW and not even take a second look. Whereas, the J6P will be wowed by any Porsche. The 1M gets the looks and thumbs up of true enthusiasts only. The crowd that cant miss an episode of Top Gear.

Sorry to hear anyone would buy a car to have his/her ego massaged. That's the distinction between an enthousiast and a poser.

Maybe you should meet more mid-aged and older Porsche owners... Last edited by GoingTooFast; 10-18-2011 at 09:38 AM.. |

I hope nobody here bought the car to have there ego massaged. I was simply trying to point out differences in ownership experience of Porsche vs 1M. I love that the 1M is for the most part owned but true enthusiasts. Most of the M3 owners in my area would be classified as posers! Maybe poser is a bit strong but definitely lacking in automotive passion!

I agree with the general consensus here that you're talking completely out of your ass. Again...

Going to chime in here, mind you the following is my own personal opinion, it will vary from driver to driver since we are each unique individuals.
Little background information: I've owned a Porsche 996 Carrera for 3 1/2 years with experience in autox and track However, just recently I traded in the 996 for a Ferrari 360. So I will just give a bit of comparison between the 1M, 996, and the 360 First off, I'm going to have to say that my Porsche 996 felt the best out of the 3 cars. Till this day I still miss it, the way it drives and just overall driving experience, how the car feels on the road etc. My 996 (even though it is not a gt3, only a c2) had factory gt3 kit, with a gt3rs wing and upgraded x50 suspension. As a bonus, it has the PSE (Porsche Sport Exhaust) one of the highly sought out exhaust for the 996 since it has the technology similar to the Akropovic wireless kit for the 1M and it sounds awesome. The Ferrari 360 is a wider and faster (HP wise) car but everytime I drive it I can't help but feel that the car is too comfortable (compared to my 996 anyways) and doesn't give me that 'driver car' feeling like you would get in the 1M or 996. However, you can see its a completely different car, its a lot more stables at higher speed. Its not a car that I would throw around the corner on a day to day basis, nor will I be doing some 'spirited' driving as the car does feel really big, its not exactly the best for small turns on the street, but on the track its a completely different story. Sorry if my description is not exactly 'useful' as I have yet to bring this baby down to autox or track. Now onto the 996, as I mentioned earlier my Porsche was semi-modded and I loved it very much because of the way it drives and handle. The 1M is very similar in the car characteristics and turn-in etc. However, one thing I do love about the 1M more than the 996 is how direct the steering is and no worries about needing to guide the tail out since this is a shorter car compared to the 996. I DD'd my 996 for 2 1/2 years, and I can say that the 1M is a lot more comfortable, and quieter than my 996. The exhaust on the 1M is too quiet incar, but an aftermarket exhaust will fix that problem. Overall driving characteristic, I would still choose the 996 over the 1M and Ferrari because overall driving experience is much much more enjoyable than the 2, even though the 996 should be the slowest of them all (debateable? 1320 kg 320hp vs 1570kg 335hp) but then again they driver completely different. FR, RR, MR. All in all, I can't help but smile everytime i drive any of these cars, they all give a very happy feeling to driver in their own respective way. Sorry if this isn't much help or input to the OP, but if you were to ask me to choose 1 out of the 3, stock for stock, then the 1M takes my vote for overall driving experience. But if I were able to choose, most likely my old (now gone) 996 for that 'raw' sportscar feel that seems to be missing in almost all the cars today.
